Summary

The Tool & Die Maker III is expected to manually create and repair machine parts, tools and dies according to blueprints, engineering drawings and specifications. Will set up, maintain and operate tools and dies to shape parts to specific sizes and finishes. Will manually measure and use measuring instruments to verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications. Will pay great attention to detail and will be responsible for the quality of each of the products machined.

Essential Job Duties


  • Analyze specifications and use specialized machinery and precision measurement tools to design, build, and test the tools and dies to be used in the manufacturing process of customer products
  • Lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, or dial indicators
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine the requirements for repairing tools and dies
  • Set up and operate conventional machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications
  • Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications, adjusting as necessary
  • Collaborate with supervisor to ensure that tools and dies meet specifications and production requirements
  • Be responsible for maintaining and repairing existing tools and dies, as well as designing and prototyping new ones
  • Maintain tools and dies, including sharpening blades and replacing worn or damaged parts
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment



Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 5 years' experience as a Tool & Die Maker with reference or machinist Journeyman's license.



Required Skills

REQUIRED:


  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, as well as have a strong understanding of the materials and processes used in tool and die making
  • Qualification and proficiency in operating manual machine shop equipment (grinder, lathe, mill, etc.) required
  • Working knowledge of precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, vernier calipers, and gauges, to ensure accuracy and precision in the manufacturing process
  • Requires high degree of attention to detail, as even small errors can result in significant problems during the manufacturing process
  • Must have a strong understanding of math and physics
  • Work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines, and can manage changing priorities
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning in problem-solving coupled with the mechanical aptitude in diagnosing and troubleshooting progressive dies and recommend repairs or modifications as needed
  • Keep up to date with new technologies and techniques in the field, and continuously improve skills through training and professional development
  • Must wear and use protective and safety equipment as required
  • Be dependable and have a strong work ethic
  • Must be willing to submit to a background investigation and to pass a post-offer drug screen


PREFERRED:

Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

Work Environment

The performance of this position normally requires exposure to a typical manufacturing environment that requires the use of personal protective equipment including steel toed shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection. Manufacturing areas may be affected by outside temperatures and machining.
