Job Summary

The Protective Services Officer (PSO) augments the UC Davis Police Department's efforts to enforce all state and federal laws, the regulations of the University of California, and UC Davis Medical Center security-related policies and procedures. The PSO will be primarily assigned to the UC Davis Medical Center but may be assigned to other facilities within the health system depending on organizational needs.

PSO security and safety responsibilities extend to all medical facilities owned or operated by UC Davis Health. Individual assignments or responsibilities are dependent on activity, calls for service, identified issues that require a security-based resolution, identified need for security assistance, or at the direction of the Security Managers or their designees.

The PSO receives direct daily supervision through a PSO Supervisor who reports to Management in charge of the Program. Specific tasks are routine and assigned by a higher authority. Completed work and decisions made are not reviewed when performed within the established policy and procedures of the unit. Work and decisions made are subject to review and supervisory approval when not covered by policy, procedures, or established guidelines.

When performing security-related duties, PSO's duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for promoting a safe healthcare environment by serving as a deterrent to criminal activity or behavior that violates policy and/or the law
  • Maintain vigilance
  • Conduct rounds
  • Provide escorts
  • Assume fixed posts
  • Open and secure entryways and exits
  • Protect staff from verbal and physical aggression
  • Provide conflict resolution
  • Prepare reports documenting responses to calls for service in support of UC Davis PD documentation
  • Complete a daily activity report
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a High school diploma, GED, OR equivalent experience/training
  • Must have a valid California Driver's License (CA DL) as this position may require the use of company vehicles
  • Must have a current State of California Security Office Guard Card OR a temporary work Guard Card permit, pending clearance from the State of California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS)
  • Must complete the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Certification within 90 days of hire
  • Excellent oral, written, and verbal communication skills to convey clear and concise information to management, the general public, staff, and students such as giving directions, writing reports/incidents, explaining policy and procedures, and encouraging others to comply with requests
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and to deal courteously with the general public, patients, staff, faculty, students, peers, supervisors, and subordinates
  • Ability to perceive the possibility of hazardous situations, react quickly, and take appropriate action, based on established policies and procedures and departmental guidelines
  • Must adhere to the University of California, Hospital and Departmental Policies & Procedures
  • Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment
  • Make appropriate behavioral changes after performance appraisal and/or counseling
  • Conduct yourself professionally and courteously, representing UC Davis Health in a positive way
  • Demonstrate good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient health information and all other sensitive information
  • Coordinate with others to ensure adequate coverage for breaks and shift changes
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability to maintain a professional work appearance including wearing a company-provided uniform and a ballistic vest
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor under stressful conditions and utilize conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy, patience, and courtesy in dealing with a wide variety of individuals

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of demonstrated recent experience working in the security field, law enforcement, or military
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the exercise of defensive tactics
  • Ability to carry and correctly and safely use handcuffs
  • Knowledge of and adherence to the University of California Hospital and Departmental Policies & Procedures

The Protective Services unit assists in providing for the protection and safety of the University of California Davis Health community (faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors) and property as needed and as prescribed by state law, the University of California Davis Police Department, General Orders, and University of California Davis Health policies and procedures.

Work Environment

  • LIVE SCAN/FINGERPRINTING REQUIRED: This position may process patient property and handle cash, cash equivalents, and valuables as a result of job functions. The PSO must be fingerprinted as part of the Police Department because of access to systems that access criminal history (CLETS)
  • Must have no felony record
  • This position participates in the DMV Pull Notice
  • Must be able to physically support law enforcement in restraining and apprehending combative subjects
  • Must be able to roll and lift 40 Lbs. security signs 10-20 ft.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods in an environment dealing with sick, injured, hostile patients and visitors
  • Must be able to sit, stand, or walk in inclement weather conditions
  • Must be able to work overtime as required by the Department
  • Working hours include weekends, nights, and most holidays
  • The work schedule varies on a 6-month rotational basis
  • Must be able to work at variable locations within UC Davis Health Campus, Sacramento, CA
