Job Summary

The Senior Premium Auditor completes all assigned premium audits adhering to company standards and industry regulations, with limited to no supervision, for mid-size to large accounts in multiple states. The incumbent will also educate insureds, brokers, and underwriters on audit rules and audit exposures.

Duties and Responsibilities



  • Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service
  • Complete virtual and mail premium audits for assigned accounts within established guidelines and best practices
  • Perform examinations of policyholders accounting and financial records to ensure accurate calculation of earned premium for risks of moderate to high complexity
  • Audit large premium accounts in all industries for multiple lines, including various liabilities and commercial auto
  • Follow all industry, state, and company guidelines in the completion of audits
  • Notify internal (Underwriting, Actuarial, UW Services, Finance) teams of concerns with assigned accounts
  • Research, respond to and revise (when appropriate) all disputed audits
  • Represent the company as an expert witness during legal disputes
  • Schedule and perform year end audits and cancellation audits on assigned accounts
  • Respond to underwriter, insured and third-party partners requests and questions regarding premium audits
  • Verify risk classification and class codes of policyholder operations
  • Prepare and deliver a detailed report of audit results


  • Interview external client contacts (i.e., accounting dept at insured; broker; CPA firm of insured; payroll / bookkeeping company of insured; etc.) for required audit documentation


  • Communicate audit results to internal and external client contacts
  • Advise management of trends identified in audits
  • Research best practices and implement needed process changes
  • Mentor and assist in the training and duties of Premium Auditors
  • Assist in assigning audit inventory
  • Perform other duties and assignments as directed by department management



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Advanced knowledge of general business, insurance, and accounting principles
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance premium audit operations
  • Advanced knowledge of Excess & Surplus insurance operations
  • Advanced knowledge of ISO General Liability rules, manuals, and industry practices
  • Advanced knowledge and skilled in NCCI or other State Bureau premium audit rules and regulations
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement in making critical decisions
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service
  • Ability to work successfully as an individual contributor and in a team environment

Experience and Education

Premium Auditor II



  • High School diploma required
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or related field preferred
  • Minimum of three years of premium auditor experience required
  • Minimum of one year experience working with multi-state accounts preferred
  • Certifications (APA, AINS) preferred



Senior Premium Auditor



  • High School diploma required
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or related field preferred
  • Minimum of five years of premium auditor experience required
  • Minimum of three years' experience working with multi-state accounts preferred
  • Certifications (APA, AINS) preferred



Assistant Manager, Premium Audit



  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in finance, audit or accounting roles within the insurance industry, financial services industry, and/or public accounting required
  • Minimum of one year experience managing professional or administrative staff preferred


  • Certifications or advanced professional credentials (APA, AINS, CPA, CIA) preferred



Manager, Premium Audit



  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in finance, audit or accounting roles within the insurance industry, financial services industry, and/or public accounting required
  • Minimum two years' experience managing professional or administrative staff preferred


  • Certifications or advanced professional credentials (APA, AINS, CPA, CIA) preferred
