Description
A Brief Overview The Financial Accounting and Reporting Director is responsible for managing the collection, recording, and reporting of all pertinent financial data and transactions; hiring, training, and management of accounting staff; and assisting with other financial functions and ensuring that transactions are reflected in the general ledger in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"), regulatory, and company policy. This role is expected to be able to articulate both the GAAP and economic aspects of financial reporting related work products to non accountants.
What you will do
- Organizes the accounting department to insure proper accounting treatment for all transactions.
- Schedules and maintains daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual routines as required.
- Coordinates year-end and quarter-end activities including audits, reviews and related PBC requests.
- Hires, trains and manages accounting staff, and regularly completes detailed review of their work and provides feedback.
- Serves as a resource person (subject knowledge expert) for other department heads, superiors, peers, and employees.
- Prepares full GAAP financial statements, footnotes and supporting schedules and performs analysis prior to distribution.
- Responsible for GAAP policy research and documentation. Monitors and ensures timely identification and compliance with evolving accounting guidance, provides US GAAP interpretations and prepares technical memorandums that document issues in a clear, logical, and comprehensive manner. Identifies and determines disclosure requirements specific to the company.
- Responsible for memos supporting accounting positions for significant transactions and presents them to management and peers.
- Reviews, documents and provides direction on accounting implications of complex transactions and assists in the preparation of complex journal entries.
- Prepares special analysis or reports upon request and regularly informs supervisor regarding the status of accounts and financial activity.
- Manages the preparation, compilation, and related analysis of consolidated financial reporting packages for submittal to executive management, BOD, and external parties. Reviews reporting packages to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements, ensures unusual variances are analyzed and investigated, and discrepancies are resolved in a timely manner.
- Collaborates with other accounting department members to establish/modify procedures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the month and year end closing and reporting process. Identifies and implements process improvement suggestions.
- Has a solid understanding of the company's policies and reporting needs to ensure that it is meeting and adhering to its reporting obligations and other requirements. Documents, implements and issues new policies and procedures or updates current policies as needed.
- Communicates and explains accounting issues and evolving accounting guidance to the Accounting management team.
- Implements and maintains reporting procedures to comply with internal control requirements.
- Delegates authority to supervisory staff for task details to facilitate efficient utilization of Company resources, and continually helps team improve process efficiencies.
- Assists in preparation of the annual budget and the monitoring of the same, if applicable.
- Serves as liaison with external auditors and consultants.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in accounting Required
- Master's Degree MBA or in accounting Preferred
- 7-9 years of accounting and reporting experience Required and
- Financial Reporting experience in a complex and sophisticated setting Preferred
- Big 4 public accounting experience Preferred
- Overall Corporate accounting or reporting experience for a Public Company Preferred
- Working knowledge of a modern ERP system such as Workday or Oracle Preferred
- Strong knowledge of chart of accounts, general ledger, trial balance, financial statement preparation required.
- Strong knowledge of technical GAAP and internal control policies and procedures.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Management ability to direct, guide, motivate, and develop staff.
- Ability to prioritize for self and others, strong organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to define problems and organize efficient solutions, analyze data, and draw valid conclusions.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Displays teamwork by balancing team and individual responsibilities.
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with MS Office applications. Advanced working knowledge of MS Excel is required.
- Requires an innovative, highly motivated individual, who is a detail oriented, self-starter who takes initiative and can lead team.
- Must demonstrate strong attention to detail, and demonstrate knowledge of accounting practices and procedures.
- Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and industry professionals.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Upon Hire Required and
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with Big 4 public accounting or public company Upon Hire Preferred
