About the Job

This position will study targeted therapy for breast cancer growth and metastasis. Ongoing research projects in the laboratory include the study of growth factor signaling in regulating growth and metastasis of breast cancer, use of animal models to study the effect of signaling inhibitors and natural killer cell based drugs on biology and metastasis of breast cancer and in vivo imaging to monitor response to targeted therapies.

Specific responsibilities/duties include:

Research - 60%: Conduct research under the PI's direction; perform supervised scientific experiments and professional laboratory work on growth factor receptor signaling and targeting in breast cancer. The work will involve analyzing signaling pathways using cell culture, western blotting; analyzing cells and tissues using flow cytometry; analyses using real-time PCR; daily record keeping; analyses of data; write up results and present them in lab meetings; read scientific literature based on the projects. The employee will plan experiments in collaboration with the supervisor and will be expected to independently problem solve and implement changes necessary to ensure success of the work.

Mouse work - 20%: Assisting/performing monitoring of mice, injecting and implanting tumor cells in mice, measuring tumor growth and imaging athymic mice during experiments, weighing mice and administering treatments to mice, harvesting and processing of blood, tumors, and lungs of mice and analysis of metastases.

Lab administration and maintenance - 15%: General lab maintenance including lab equipment, ordering laboratory chemicals and supplies, making solutions, hazardous waste management, stocking of lab & tissue culture, routine lab upkeep; preparing research summaries.

Orient and Train - 5%: Assist in the training of incoming lab members, including undergraduate students and maintain lab safety and training records.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required:
* Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline and work experience related to the job to equal four years.
* Experience with cell culture of cell lines.
The selected candidate will have interest in animal models of cancer biology and use of modern molecular biology techniques. They will also be expected to demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, motivation, ability to follow protocols, work independently, and multi-task.

Preferred:
* Experience and demonstrated technical ability in biochemical and analytical assays.

* Western blotting, isolation of RNA and PCR, and flow cytometry.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.

* Experience with mouse handling.
* Ability to read and evaluate scientific papers; ability to write up scientific results and contribute to editing manuscripts; strong computer and organizational skills.
