Role Description:

The Budget Intern will support DC Water's Budget Office by assisting with financial data collection, organization, and input related to budget allocations, expenditures, and forecasts. The intern will also help track budget performance, analyze variances, and update financial reports. Additionally, the intern will assist with the development of budget documents, preparing presentation materials for meetings, and supporting cost of service studies. The intern will gain hands-on experience in public sector budgeting, financial analysis, and the specific financial dynamics of a large utility organization.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

As a summer Intern, we will provide you with:

Your essential functions include, but are not limited to:



  • Financial Data Gathering & Organization: Assist in gathering, organizing, and inputting financial data related to budget allocations, expenditures, and forecasts.
  • Budget Performance Tracking & Analysis: Support the team in tracking budget performance, analyzing variances, and updating financial reports.
  • Budget Document Preparation: Help prepare spreadsheets, charts, and reports for fiscal planning, including developing budget documents and supporting cost of service studies.
  • Presentation Material Preparation: Assist in preparing slides, charts, and other presentation materials for budget meetings and board presentations.
  • SOP Support: Assist in drafting and reviewing standard operating procedures related to budgeting processes.
  • Training Support: Support training initiatives to familiarize staff with budgeting procedures.
  • Administrative Support: Provide administrative support, including filing, scheduling meetings, and organizing documents to improve office efficiency.
  • Ad Hoc Projects: Assist with ad hoc projects, which may involve data analysis, report preparation, or other tasks that support ongoing budget initiatives.
  • Training & Meetings: Attend relevant training sessions and budget meetings to deepen understanding of the budgeting process, public finance, and financial requirements of DC Water.

Required Skills & Qualifications



Required Experience:
Experience working with Microsoft Excel for financial data analysis, including using formulas, creating charts, and managing data
Basic understanding of budgeting processes and financial reporting
Previous experience in an office or administrative setting
Minimum Education Requirements:
Must be currently enrolled fulltime in an undergraduate or graduate program
Must have at least 30 credit hours complete
Must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average
Required Skills:
Strong analytical skills to interpret and work with financial data
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and financial modeling
Attention to detail in tracking budgets and analyzing variances
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for report preparation and presentations
Problem-solving skills to identify budget discrepancies and recommend solutions
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
Research abilities and a willingness to learn about public finance and budgeting processes

Preferred Skills & Qualifications



Preferred Experience:
Internship experience at another utility or in a public sector budgeting environment
Experience with financial data analysis, forecasting, and variance analysis

Preferred Majors: Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration
Preferred Skills:
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation, reporting, and presentations
Experience with financial forecasting, cost analysis, and variance reporting
Exposure to public sector budgeting practices, especially within utility organizations
