About the Job

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) at the University of Minnesota seeks a senior level family medicine researcher to be Vice Chair for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the Josie Robinson Johnson Endowed Chair. This position will provide strategic leadership and oversight for the development and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the Family Medicine department. This role will work closely with faculty, residents, staff, and students to create an inclusive, and equitable environment that fosters excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Duties for the position include:
* Develop and implement a comprehensive DEI strategic plan aligned with the department's mission and values.
* Foster a culture of inclusivity and belonging by promoting diversity and equity in all aspects of the department's operations.
* Develop or identify/curate health equity, cultural humility and cultural safety, structural competency, and anti-oppression training tools and resources-make accessible and broad-reaching.
* Oversee DEI initiatives related to recruitment, retention, and advancement of faculty, staff, and learners from underrepresented groups.
* Lead and oversee the Department Equity Diversity and Inclusion Working Group/Steering Committee to increase the number and proportion of underrepresented in medicine (URM) DFMCH faculty and residents.
* Work with the Vice Chair for Education and other educational leaders to develop or identify structural competency, anti-oppression, and cultural humility curricula for use for education of both residents and faculty.
* Coordinate health equity and inclusion/integration work by individuals or the Department with the Medical School, clinical organizations (Fairview/M Health/MPhysicians) and University.
* Identify areas of health inequities and use an equity lens for any clinical policies and procedures. Stratify each Departmental clinical metric by REL (race, ethnicity, language) to target disparities. Coordinate interventions and efforts to address disparities.
* Serve as a liaison to leaders or groups in the Medical School, AHC, and University, e.g. the new Vice-Dean of Diversity Equity and Inclusion in the Medical School and the UMN Office for Equity and Diversity.
* Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of DEI initiatives and identify areas for improvement.
* Participate as a member of the DFMCH Executive Team led by the Department Head.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • MD/DO with board certification in Family Medicine or PhD or equivalent degree in a health, mental health/behavioral medicine, public health or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Proven success in academic administrative leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring graduate and/or medical students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in leadership roles related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education or healthcare settings.

Physician applicants should have:

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO Degree
  • Completion of a Family Medicine residency; board certified in specialty; licensed or eligible in Minnesota

Preferred:

  • Three or more years of practice experience beyond residency completion
  • One or more years of medical teaching experience
About the Department

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of eight family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, three in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor four fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. We are regularly among the top National Institutes of Health-funded family medicine departments and are currently 1st in Blue Ridge Rankings. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: This role is an augmentation that will comprise 20% effort of a full time faculty position. Physician applicants will be dually employed by the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Physicians. Salary at the University of Minnesota is dependent upon academic effort of the person hired, and begins at $52,000. Clinical salary, aligned with clinical effort, is provided through University of Minnesota Physicians. Total salary will be in the range of $210,000 - $230,000. Total salary will be dependent on taking medicine and/or OB call, years of experience, and rank. Total salary is competitive with market and based on AAMC salary benchmarks. This role will come with an augmentation of $12,000 annually. Opportunities for additional compensation are available via the department's incentive pay plan.
