Role Description:

The HVAC Mechanic 11 serves as the principal mechanic responsible for the full range of activities associated with the installation, repair, and maintenance of air conditioning, ventilation, and heating equipment throughout the Authority as defined by the District of Columbia's Municipal Regulations for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Equipment.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Tests heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
  • Utilizes expert knowledge of the trade to troubleshoot problems and/or provide detailed summaries about malfunctions on HVAC equipment. Makes authoritative recommendations on resolving problems.
  • Repairs HVAC systems: tests HVAC systems upon completion of the repair to ensure the system or unit repaired according to manufacturer's requirements.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on existing HVAC equipment.
  • Installs HVAC equipment and other refrigeration systems under the jurisdiction of the Authority.
  • Operates Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position. Maintains vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner. Reports any operating deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.
  • Complies with the Authority's occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with the Department's Mechanical Services Operational policies and procedures.
  • The incumbent is subject to being placed on call during hours and schedule identified by the Authority.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.

Required Experience:
Five (5) years of experience that demonstrates expert knowledge of the trade and the ability to make authoritative recommendations or solutions to resolving problems.
Minimum Education Requirements:
High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
Required Skills:
Knowledge of basic electrical and electronic principles, formulas, electrical symbols, color codes, pneumatic and hydraulic principles to accurately service highly complex and intricate service handling systems. Ability to read and interpret electrical wiring prints, schematic, and functional diagrams, drawings, and instruction manuals, written instructions and/or procedures.
Ability to use hand and power tools, oxygen-acetylene cutting equipment, etc.
Performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where parts or systems maybe frequently hard to reach.
Performs work functions requiring stooping, bending, and/or kneeling for long periods of time.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Must possess and maintain current a valid Motor Vehicle Operating License and a DC Water Vehicle Endorsement.
Must possess and maintain current a valid Journeyman Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic License from any jurisdiction, a Refrigerant Recovery Certification (for Type I and Il Refrigerants), and a DC 3rd Class Steam Engineer's License.
Must possess and maintain current a valid District of Columbia Journeyman Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Mechanic License within 12 months from date of hire. Failure to obtain a DC Journeyman Refrigeration/AC Mechanic License within 12 months from date of hire will result in termination of employment
Required Languages:
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Subject to indoor and/or outdoor environmental conditions that include exposure to extreme cold and/or hot temperatures.
Subject to noise, vibration, and to hazards from a variety of physical conditions.
Subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, chemicals, sewage, activated sludge, lubricants, and other cutting fluids and requires wearing personal protective equipment.
Work is performed in a heavy industrial environmental, at pumping and treatment locations, in biologically contaminated underground facilities, including wet wells, electrical manholes, treatment process tanks, and on high places such as roofs, cranes, catwalks, and towers.
