Job Summary:

The research specialist position is a multi-functional position housed within the Townsend Lab in Forest & Wildlife Ecology of UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and provides support for airborne hyperspectral imaging including data acquisition and processing in support of the EnSpec facility.

Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 20% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 20% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 20% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 20% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Qualifications:

Required:
-2 years working with airborne remote sensing data and airborne remote sensing mission planning.
-2 years experience programming in Python.
-Excellent organizational, management, and office skills.
-Demonstrated experience working successfully in a high-traffic, high-demand environment and ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
-Experience with geospatial data, databases and spreadsheets.
-Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills.
-Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.

Preferred:
-Knowledge of plant biology
-Knowledge of atmospheric radiative transfer models


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $57,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $57,000 - $60,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.
