Position Highlights |
The University of Arizona seeks a visionary, innovative, and collaborative leader to serve as the next Director of the School of Theatre, Film & Television (TFTV). The Director of TFTV will also serve as Director of the Hanson FilmTV Institute, housed within the School and funded through an endowment. Formed in 2010 through the merging of the School of Media Arts and the School of Theatre Arts, TFTV is located within the College of Fine Arts, which forms part of Arizona Arts, the U of A's unified gateway to the arts for campus and the broader community. Reporting to the Vice President for the Arts and Dean of the College of Fine Arts, currently Dr. Andrew Schulz, the director will serve as a leader in the College of Fine Arts and the division of Arizona Arts. Arizona Arts brings together the highly regarded academic programs of the College of Fine Arts and world-renowned assets, programs, and educational opportunities provided by Arizona Arts Live, the Center for Creative Photography, and the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Established in 2019 as part of the university's strategic plan, Arizona Arts magnifies the transformative power of the arts at University of Arizona and in its surrounding communities. The next director will employ a collaborative, transparent, and forward-looking approach to leadership; exemplary personal and professional integrity; and a commitment to the University of Arizona's mission and core values. The director will have earned a terminal degree from an accredited institution in a field relevant to the programs of TFTV - or the equivalent - and have established a sustained record of excellence in administrative leadership, scholarship/creative practice, and teaching that merits appointment as a tenured full professor at U of A. Duties & Responsibilities |
The director will provide leadership in multiple areas: Academic leadership stimulates and facilitates excellence in carrying out the intellectual and academic agenda of the School in the integrated areas of teaching, research/creative inquiry, and service. This includes developing innovative curricula; recruiting, developing, and retaining outstanding faculty and staff; and effectively fostering student success, including recruitment, retention, and career readiness. Operational and fiscal leadership encompasses guiding the affairs of the School in relation to budget planning and execution, administrative and facilities oversight, philanthropic development, fiscal stewardship, and all activities related to personnel policy and its implementation. It also includes establishing the climate and structure within the organization that allows the School to move forward in a way that is aligned with the mission of the School, the College, and the University. Collaborative leadership entails full and effective participation in the CFA Academic Leadership Team and the Arizona Arts Senior Leadership Team, working closely with other academic and non-academic unit leaders to enhance the overall excellence in teaching, research, and service of the College of Fine Arts and Arizona Arts. It also means helping to plan and implement future directions for the organization and engaging in development and partnership with the many and diverse constituencies that the College of Fine Arts and Arizona Arts serve. This may occasionally require setting aside specific interests of the unit in favor of support for broader organizational objectives. The successful candidate's duties will include: * Managing personnel across the School. * Overseeing budgets, facilities, and short- and long-term planning. * Overseeing curriculum and academic program development. * Devising and implementing strategies to foster collaboration, integration, and a demonstrated sense of shared purpose across the faculty and programs that comprise the School. * Developing partnerships with other schools in the CFA and with other units on campus to enhance the overall excellence in teaching, research, and service of the college and university. * Building and sustaining relationships with alumni and with philanthropic and corporate partners and communities to establish fundraising efforts that support and enhance the mission of the School. * Promoting a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion by recruiting and retaining administrators, faculty, staff, and students from underrepresented populations; and through teaching and curricula, outreach and community engagement, and administrative practices. * Creating a climate of respect, fairness, and transparency. * Active and engaged participation as a member of the CFA Academic Leadership Team and the Arizona Arts Senior Leadership Team. * At the discretion of the Dean/VP, the director may, on occasion, be asked to lead or participate in projects or activities on behalf of the college and/or the division. *Additional duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: *Demonstrated understanding of the broader impact of arts and culture in contemporary society. |
Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 11 years of related work experience, including 7 years of managerial experience, preferably in large complex institutions or organizations, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Requires experience in leading multiple teams, projects, programs, and/or functions.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Leadership experience in an arts related organization.
- A terminal degree in theatre/film, arts, public, non-profit and/or management are preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
- Experience identifying, cultivating, and maintaining relationships that magnify visibility to a multitude of constituencies is necessary.
- A documented record of successful fundraising.
- Experience in managing and overseeing budgets.
