The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

We are seeking a versatile and detail-oriented professional to fill the role of Research and Database Coordinator. This position combines responsibilities in advanced data analytics, applied genetics research coordination, and artificial intelligence (AI) development for vision science. The role supports collaborative efforts across Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and affiliated institutions, focusing on data management, analytics development, and research facilitation.

Effort Allocation:




  • 40%: Lab Researcher at the Artificial Intelligence for Vision Science Lab (AI4VS)

  • 30%: Analytics Developer within CUIMC Analytics

  • 30%: RedCap Database Coordinator


Responsibilities

Artificial Intelligence for Vision Science Lab (40%)



  • Support the development and implementation of federated learning models to analyze biomedical imaging data.
  • Standardize and transform data into the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model.
  • Coordinate data wrangling, storage, and analysis across multiple CUMC locations.
  • Train machine learning models and document findings, challenges, and solutions for publication.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to lab members on machine learning and AI processes.


CUIMC Analytics Developer (30%)



  • Design, create, and maintain data structures, reports, dashboards, and data extracts from institutional data sources such as Epic and legacy electronic health records.
  • To become certified and serve as a Clinical Data Navigator (CDN) to assist with the formulation, development and fulfillment of data requests made by ophthalmology faculty and staff for the purposes of clinical care, quality evaluation and improvement, compliance, billing and revenue-related activities and research and education.
  • Proficiently use SQL and institutional business intelligence tools for data analytics and visualization.
  • Translate operational definitions into technical specifications and ensure deliverables adhere to HIPAA, IRB, and institutional standards.
  • Actively contribute to institutional data dictionary development and ongoing improvements in reporting efficiency.


RedCap Database Coordination (30%)



  • Maintain and update patient genetic data within the RedCap database, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Support gene discovery research by analyzing genetic data and contributing to collaborative projects with research teams.
  • Provide Principal Investigators (PIs) with support in setting up and maintaining RedCap databases for research.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required
  • Proficiency in SQL, R, and Python for data analytics and machine learning.
  • Experience with database management systems such as RedCap and familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines, HIPAA regulations, and data governance.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Degree in Applied Statistics, Data Science, Genetics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with Epic's Clinical Data Model and Power BI or similar BI tools.
  • Background in vision science and vision research.
  • Familiarity with machine learning applications in biomedical research.
