HJF is seeking a Creative Arts Therapist (Art Therapist, Dance/Movement Therapist or Music Therapist) to work at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, FL. Half of this role entails working with the Creative Forces clinical team to develop programming to better understand how a creative arts therapist could support areas impacted by national emergencies and disaster events in collaboration with interagency teams and in alignment with the US Department of Veteran's Affairs "Fourth Mission" - to improve the nation's preparedness for response to war, terrorism, national emergencies, and natural disasters by developing plans and taking actions to ensure continued service to Veterans, as well as to support national, state, and local emergency management, public health, safety and homeland security efforts. The creative arts therapist may later pilot this programming by being embedded in emergency response teams. The other half of this position focuses that will investigate how the creative arts therapies and various healing arts models developed and tested within the Creative Forces Network can be adapted and delivered to service members, veterans, and families.

This position will be in support of the Creative Forces Network.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


Responsibilities

  • Establish and sustain relationships with national emergency response sectors to integrate the arts into response and recovery in ways that are trauma-informed, support well-being and resilience, and build trusted networks of support to improve responsiveness to unique individual, veteran, and community needs in the wake of natural disasters and national emergencies. This may require periods of travel within scheduled deployment windows to areas impacted by disaster events, including remote locations with potentially austere conditions, and with limited access to emergency and/or social support services to provide creative arts therapies services to support Veterans, individuals and communities (including targeted support for first responders). Travel periods will be for up to one month twice per year.
  • Work with Clinical Program Evaluator and Clinical Lead for Disaster Response to assess the needs of Veterans, individuals, communities, and first responders before, during, and after disasters or national emergency events, and to develop and implement a measurement plan and shared repository of resources.
  • Seek opportunities to educate and raise awareness of the value and impact of the arts and creative arts therapies in supporting the needs of Veterans, individuals, communities, and first responders before, during, and after disasters or national emergency events, in collaboration with Creative Forces' Research, Evaluation and Informatics team.
  • Engage with the cadre of CATs within the Creative Forces Network to identify and share best practices, including through the development of content for the National Resources Center. Actively engage in both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration with the Network of CATs as active member of a community of practice to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality care, while supporting one another professionally.
  • Participate in training, education, outreach, and media activities or other activities as requested by the Senior Military Medical Advisor.
  • Perform clinical care, community engagement and scholarly activity, while serving as an integral part of the interdisciplinary clinical team at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center as well as within the Creative Forces Network.
  • Develop and implement clinical services on site and as directed via telehealth or in the community, including implementing treatment programs and professional casework for active duty military personnel, veterans and their eligible dependents designated to receive care by the Department of Defense (DoD) or Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and as specifically allowed under the Memorandum of Understanding/Memorandum of Agreement between the site facility and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
  • Coordinate and work with the clinical site POC for day-to-day operations, meetings and to determine site specific requirements.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Art Therapy or Dance/Movement Therapy: Possess a Master's Degree (or higher) in art therapy or dance/movement therapy from an accredited program. Preferred to have a minimum of two years' (or higher) graduate level and/or post-graduate experience in a clinical setting, preferably working with military-connected populations, community resiliency, disaster response, trauma, or similar focus areas.

  • Music Therapy: Possess a Bachelor's Degree or higher in music therapy from an accredited program. Preferred to have a minimum of three years, post bachelor's experience in a clinical setting, preferably working with military-connected populations, community resiliency, disaster response, trauma, or similar focus areas.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Art Therapist: ATR or ATR-BC through continuing education as required by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB)
  • Music Therapist: MT-BC from Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)
  • Dance/Movement Therapist: R-DMT or BC-DMT through continuing education as required by the Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board (DMTCB)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to relate to diverse patient populations.
  • Sensitivity to individuals from varied backgrounds and cultures.
  • Competency with age-specific needs from childhood through young adulthood.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Work Environment

  • The work is primarily performed in an office or secondary location such as a home or alternative location in support of Creative Forces Mission as directed by the Military Medical Advisor. Additional work environments to include travel to areas impacted by disaster events.

Travel Required

  • You will be expected to travel for periodic trainings and meetings, approximately three times per year, and may be expected to travel to disaster locations for up to 30 days two times per year. Travel will be unlikely in the first year of employment.

Physical Capabilities

  • Travel periods may require the ability to safely navigate work sites in disaster areas, potentially including regular walking, climbing, standing, stepping, etc. during various inclement weather conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather) and the ability to work long shifts or perform tasks under extreme stress.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $57,650-$70,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
