The Medical Technologist II is responsible for performing laboratory testing and procedures in any/all areas of the laboratory and reporting timely accurate test results.

The Blood and Marrow Transplant Laboratory works closely with the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program team, this lab helps to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pediatric transplant patients. Our team is the region's most experienced pediatric blood and marrow transplant and cellular therapy (BMT) program. We have performed more than 1,100 bone marrow transplants and have a growing cellular therapy program offering new, effective and less toxic therapies for a variety of diseases.

The Transfusion Medicine branch of our Laboratory Services Department is responsible for supplying safe, pure and potent blood and cellular therapy products to the patients we serve. Our labs offer a wide range of high-quality lab screenings and diagnostic tests with rapid turnaround times, as well as an unmatched scope and capabilities, including diagnostic tests that aren't available anywhere else in the country.

Department: BMT Lab
Hours per pay week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Days, Monday - Friday. Hours may vary based on the needs of the department. With rotating on-call for weekends and holidays.

• EDUCATION - Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
• EXPERIENCE - Two years clinical laboratory experience required.
• EQUIVALENCY - Meeting one of the other requirements set by the ASCP Board of Certification may be accepted in lieu of degree.
• CERTIFICATION(S) - Medical Technologist/Scientist Certification ASCP or equivalent
• Previous BMT and/or Blood Bank experience is preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Responsible for reporting accurate results, evaluating results for clinical significance and validity, and for recognition of atypical/abnormal results requiring additional follow up.
• Ensures quality control is acceptable and instrumentation is functioning and maintained within defined tolerance limits and documentation is completed.
• Consciously works to minimize errors and takes responsibility for correcting and documenting errors in a timely manner.
• Performs all laboratory functions according to standard operating procedures and guidelines established by regulatory agencies, including participation in proficiency testing and familiarization with regulations and quality indicators.
• Troubleshoots equipment and assay performance when results are questionable.
• Teaches, trains and/or mentors new employees, students and other healthcare professionals according to standard operating procedures, when requested.
• Responsible for completing quality assurance activities such as maintenance, statistics, calibration verification and quality control review.
• Participates in procedure review and writing.
• May perform validations, verifications and implementation of new assays.
• May assist in competency assessment.
• May procure blood from patients by venipuncture, fingerstick or heelstick to obtain blood samples for analysis following age-specific guidelines.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

Guidelines: Fully qualified, full performance or journey level.
