Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) in the department of Neurological Surgery, the Research Financial Analyst (RFA) Lead provides functional team training and supervisory support to ensure adherence to UC and sponsor policies and processes for post-award management. The RFA Lead, an expert in research administration, is responsible for implementation of policies and processes, reporting, training and compliance specific to post-award management at UCSF in collaboration with Contracts and Grants Accounting (CGA), Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), and other business units. Through leadership and mentorship, the RFA Lead ensures consistent high quality financial management of grant, gifts, and endowment funding and exceptional support to the department's research faculty and labs to assure continued research funding to the department, in addition to compliance with institutional policy and regulatory requirements for post-award management.

The RFA Lead provides support to the CFO in the development, training and implementation of departmental policy, processes, performance measures and in managing compliance and audit issues specific to post-award management. The RFA Lead will be responsible for post-award management training and quality monitoring, data management and reporting, and will be assigned responsibility for certain complex and challenging research portfolios. The RFA Lead ensures consistent application of contracts and grants accounting policy and processes, works closely with the CFO to report and interpret performance and metric data, and works with OSR, CGA, and the School of Medicine Dean's office to assure coordination of additional training needs.

The RFA Lead has requisite knowledge and expertise and meets the rigorous standards of contract and award management, including interpretation of government, non-profit and University policies for the administration of research, training and public service awards. This position provides leadership and coverage in the event of the CFO's absence in the department, identifies issues, collects relevant information and works closely with the CFO to enact a plan for resolution, and then manages the positive outcome through to the conclusion.

Additionally, the RFA Lead will support the CFO with managing the financial portfolios of the divisions within the department to ensure the divisions meet their financial and strategic objectives and goals. This role assures accountability and stewardship of division resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with the divisions' goals and objectives.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $110,400 - $235,400 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 5+ experience in research and finance administration with ability to understand and resolve complex project problems
  • 5+ years of advanced skills in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook; demonstrated experience with preparing custom financial reports in Excel; proven competency with using personnel, finance and purchasing systems including MyReports, MyExpense, UCPath, and BearBuy
  • Demonstrated ability to screen applications, interview candidates, and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire.
  • Ability to orient new employees, distribute work, and monitor the progress of work.
  • Advanced skills using common desktop / web applications; understanding of research enterprise databases.
  • Expert skills in communicating clearly verbally and in writing to multiple constituencies.
  • Excellent service orientation skills, strong management skills, leadership, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and creative problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Expert knowledge of industry and grant funding best practices and procedures.
  • Proven ability to deal with changing priorities and direct the work of other accordingly and multi-task.
  • Advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • In-depth knowledge of the organization's operational, personnel, and financial transactions and systems related to administration of contracts and grants.
  • Solid understanding of financial and resource planning concepts as well as how to control organizational budgeting.
  • Extensive knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems, budgeting and reporting techniques, accounting and bookkeeping.
