About the Department |
Interdisciplinary Affairs and Partnerships (
IAP) is a unit with NC State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
IAP is home to Interdisciplinary Studies (
IDS) and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (
MALS).
IDS includes six majors/major concentrations with more than 500+ students in Africana Studies, Arts Studies, International Studies, Self-Design, Science, Technology and Society, and Women's and Gender Studies.
IDS also offers mine minor programs, provides support for three dual degree programs.
IDS has core faculty and faculty directors and coordinators who work in partnership with other departments from
CHASS and beyond to deliver the courses in each major/major concentration.
The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (
MALS) Program is a unique graduate program that allows students to create individualized programs of study around the topic of their choice. The
MALS program is designed to be flexible for adult, part-time students, many of whom will be working while enrolled in the program or returning to school after an extended break in educational training.
IAP actively partners with departments and programs on campus and in the Triangle, to host major events including speakers and conferences in support of the majors several times during the school year.
IAP works closely with the Dean's office to provide programing and establish and review policies governing interdisciplinary collaborations. |
Essential Job Duties |
The
IDS/
MALS Support Specialist reports to the Business Services Coordinator (
BSC) and provides administrative and programmatic support for Interdisciplinary Studies (
IDS) and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (
MALS). This role supports the Associate Dean,
IDS faculty, and the
MALS Graduate Program Director in coordinating events, managing communications, and facilitating administrative processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage calendars and provide administrative assistance to the Associate Dean and BSC. Coordinate faculty travel and assist with IDS and MALS events, the annual newsletter, and alumni outreach.
- Assist the MALS Graduate Program Director with student support, including graduate plans of work, residency requirements, scheduling defenses, maintaining records, coordinating program advertisements, and organizing orientations.
- Maintain the department website, create and manage IDS listservs and Google groups for faculty, staff, and students, and oversee internal communications.
- Oversee daily office functions, maintain faculty and student mailboxes, monitor office equipment, and coordinate necessary troubleshooting and support.
- Handle travel authorizations, reimbursements, and PCard transactions, ensuring compliance with NC State guidelines. Track spending, generate reports, and provide guidance to faculty on travel and procurement policies.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Proficient in Microsoft, Google Suite, and Student Information Systems, particularly spreadsheets, and ability to clearly communicate and represent the program.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player.
