The Honors College at West Virginia University is seeking applications for the position of Pre-Health Advisor/Program Coordinator for the Pre-Health Professional Development Office. About the Opportunity Under the supervision of the Director, this position will be responsible for meeting the mission of the Pre-Health Office by assisting students applying for technical or graduate-level health professional programs. The Pre-Health Advisor (PHA) will assist with providing pre-health guidance for undergraduate and graduate students across all colleges within the University regarding proper curricular choices, community engagement, and other experiential activities that will best prepare them for success in their chosen health profession. The PHA will work closely with the Director to establish and maintain academic and extracurricular programs that foster strong interpersonal and intrapersonal growth and professionalism. What You'll Do
- Advise students applying for professional and graduate-level health programs (e.g., medical, dental, pharmacy, public health, physical/occupational therapy, etc.) through conducting seminars, workshops, information sessions, and through one-on-one appointments
- Advise students with the application process for professional and graduate-level health programs (e.g., medical, dental, pharmacy, public health, physical/occupational therapy, etc.) including but not limited to providing feedback and guidance on personal statements, essays, and other application documents
- Prepare students for professional interviews through mock interviews and preparation sessions with support from faculty in targeted disciplines
- Assist with the Pre-Health Office application support services (e.g., Application Prep Program) including developing, troubleshooting, advertising, and managing logistical aspects of the process(es)
- Provide guidance to students preparing for post undergraduate study, including those pursuing research programs in affiliated health fields and careers
- Represent the Pre-Health Office and its programming to internal and external constituencies
- Manage (with support of the Honors College Director of Communications and Marketing) communications including event calendar, website, and social media accounts for the Pre-Health Office
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with units inside WVU including (but not limited to) health professional programs, academic advisors, Career Services, ASPIRE and Office of Undergraduate Research.
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with external groups including (but mt limited to) graduate professional programs and representatives interested meeting with WVU students.
- Teach and/or design course curriculum for one Honors course within discipline per semester
The anticipated hiring range for this position is: $50k-54,000 per year. The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience recruiting and/or advising students.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Interest, empathy and ability in helping students develop intellectually, socially and ethically.
- Ability to take initiative, be self-directed and see projects to completion with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of various graduate health professions application processes preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills in dealing sensitively with a wide variety of constituents, including students, parents, faculty, and professional school representatives.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Sense of humor, flexibility and patience.
- Ability to work independently, creatively, and collaboratively in an organized manner.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet established deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to use technology to keep accurate records.
- Ability to analyze, interpret and utilize data for recruiting and program improvement.
- Ability to problem solve and think critically
- Some evening and weekend hours may be required during peak operation and to participate in recruitment events.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree; health related field given preference
- At least one year of technical writing in a professional position.
