Description:

The Coordinator for Student Support/Student Engagement: provides support to the academy team by working to engage students in the learning environment; monitoring attendance; and responding to student behaviors that impact instruction. The coordinator's responsibilities include supporting an academy at the Academies at Alexandria City, and more specifically, responding to tier one behavioral needs; collaborating with a student support team in the implementation of the MTSS framework; and assisting staff with implementing tier one instructional and behavioral management systems. The coordinator also supports the school's implementation of a schoolwide PBIS structure that develops responsible student behavior and citizenship; and, promoting a positive school climate, as well as partnering with the school support team to engage and re-engage students into the school environment.

The coordinator is an integral member of the school leadership team and collaborates with a team of stakeholders, including administrative team members, building and community stakeholders, and division administration.

This job reports to the campus administrator.

Qualifications:



  • Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: NONE
  • Experience: At least three to five years of K-12 school division experience (grades 9-12 preferred); demonstrated competencies (engagements, observations, evaluations, and tracking tools) to assess and manage student behavior; experience developing and implementing school-wide programs, e.g., PBIS, Restorative Practices.


Essential Functions:



  • Facilitates goal-setting, reflection, and re-entry processes for students returning to class
  • Coordinates with families and community resources when needed
  • Maintains documentation and help assess the effectiveness of student support interventions
  • Collaborates with the high school's lead administrator of student support to implement the Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports, i.e. behavioral, social-emotional, attendance, and academic supports are provided to students
  • Promotes student achievement and track student progress through data analysis and collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • In coordination with the dean of students, develops positive relationships with students and oversee the implementation of student support plans; ensures the communication of all support plans with parents/guardians (caregivers)
  • Works with the academy dean to implement student behavioral management responses and works with the dean to promote positive school behavior, i.e., PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), including counseling and mentoring students
  • Ensures students follow suspensions expectations and acts on supports with student referrals
  • Participates in re-entry (follow-up) meetings with students and their families to re-engage the student in the learning environment
  • Monitors attendance data by tracking and reporting issues of concern to the social worker and truancy specialist when necessary
  • Evaluates data to assess action steps, i.e. monitors the implementation of student discipline and utilizes related data to assess the effectiveness of interventions, i.e. PBIS.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of the following student support initiatives: Restorative practices; Trauma-informed care; Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS); and Social-emotional learning (SEL) programs
  • Develops intervention strategies and organizes programs to ensure positive student conduct, e.g., peer-mediation programs and restorative practices.
  • Serves as liaison between the school and parents (caregivers), community organizations, and/or school police and law enforcement authorities by providing updates on student behavior policies and issues.
  • Coordinates with the school-based administrators on identifying alternative education programs as needed and assists with student transitions to and from the program to ensure engagement and active participation
  • In collaboration with the dean of students, assists teachers, school counselors, and parents in developing student expectations and individual student behavior contracts (verbal or written).
  • Ability to build rapport and mentor students, particularly those who are at-risk or disengaged.
  • Provides all reports, e.g., written and oral, in a timely manner, ensuring discretion in maintaining the confidentiality of student information.
  • Fosters effective interpersonal relations and develops positive relationships with staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Works with the dean and academic principal to establish and implement high standards of student behavior and ethical conduct;.
  • Works closely with the ACPS Office of Safety and Security to participate in advanced level training related to school safety and turnkey relevant training to staff.
  • Helps co-manage the daily operations of the school campus including safety and security operational tasks, such as managing emergency drills, leading arrival/dismissal procedures, cafeteria duty, and attending evening activities, e.g., performance arts and athletic events.
  • Collaborates with the school's security officers (SSOs) and School Resource Officers (SROs)
  • Conducts frequent walkthroughs throughout the school and outdoor campus to ensure students are in their assigned location and engaging in the learning environment
  • With the collaboration of school administrators, supports the implementation of programming related to a positive and safe learning environment, i.e., Restorative Practices, SEAL, and PBIS.
  • Identifies students with attendance and/or disciplinary issues to resolve those issues with school counselors, parents, and social workers to ensure a positive outcome.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the high school.
