Position: Medical Technologist I, Mercy Southeast

Department:Core Lab

Shift: Full-Time (40Hrs Week) 1:30PM-10:00PM, Evenings, Every other weekend and Holiday

Overview:

The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists evaluate and report test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Job Description:

Financial Performance
Demonstrates stewardship of resources in regards to inventory, time management, and meeting productivity standards.

Operational Effectiveness
oPerforms the full range of testing and reporting according to department policies and procedures as required
oAccurately performs and records quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance
oOrganizes, prioritizes and completes work to achieve defined turnaround times and expectations
oTroubleshoots and resolves problems or unexpected test results, in a timely manner
Documents and communicate to appropriate stakeholders
Completes incidence reports as necessary
oParticipates in maintaining current department policies and procedures
oCommunicates professionally and effectively with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, vendors and the public
oDemonstrates appropriate use of information systems (HIS, LIS, software, Internet, etc.)
oPerforms the acquisition, labeling, and transfer of all required types of specimens for laboratory testing: utilizing accurate, effective, professional, and confidential accepted methodologies as required
oPerforms all tasks associated with processing, transfer and referral of required laboratory specimens in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and departmental policies as required

oComplies with laboratory management requests to meet staffing plans and department needs
oDemonstrates initiative to assist the laboratory in all areas
oWorks collaboratively with all co-workers to accomplish laboratory, department, or hospital goals
oAttends departmental, laboratory and hospital meetings as required
oParticipates in the training and education of others as requested
oMonitors and helps maintain inventory of reagents and supplies

Quality
oReviews and evaluates quality control in accordance with quality plan
Documents findings and implements corrective action
oDemonstrates and documents competency in areas of assigned responsibility
oReviews, evaluates and correlates laboratory results before releasing and reporting according to policies and procedures
oCommunicates and documents critical information according to policies and procedures
oRecognizes, identifies and engages in opportunities for process improvement
oEnsures quality and integrity of specimens prior to testing
oParticipates in proficiency testing
oComplies with all health and safety regulations and requirements
oComplies with all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures
oComplies with all accreditation standards
oParticipates in collection of process improvement data
oDemonstrates less than 3 errors, resulting in chart revision, in a continuous 12 month period

Continuing Education
a.Accumulates a minimum of 12 CEU per year
i.Accepted CEU
1.Educational programs such webinars, on-line education, conferences, classes, etc.
a.Programs must be related to medical laboratory science or provide education acceptable for acquisition of a position available at the hospital
b.A certificate of attendance or other documentation of completion is required
2.Other developmental opportunities
Must be approved by laboratory management prior to commencement.
Laboratory management will determine CEU award.
b.Completes mandatory courses on time

Other
Performs other work duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Associate degree
Licensure:
Experience:
Certifications: MLT certification OR Bachelors degree, in a major that meets a certification agencys requirements OR Completion of a 50 week U.S. military medical laboratory training course
Other:
Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree preferred.
Preferred Licensure:
Preferred Experience: 3 years acceptable clinical laboratory experience
Preferred Certifications: MT(ASCP) or equivalent
Preferred Other:
