Job Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine's Animal Health Research Department is seeking a Farm Manager. This role is responsible for managing the care of assigned animals across multiple units in Alabama and provides direction for routine maintenance to equipment, facilities, and land as determined by the coordinator.
Essential Functions

  • Manages and participates in the daily operations and maintenance of an animal care and holding complex of large animal species that supports veterinary medicine teaching, research and treatment programs.
  • Informs supervisor or department head of work progress, present and potential problems, and makes suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing problems.
  • Assists in the preparation planning and execution of special events and activities.
  • Provides technical and mechanical assistance in the maintenance and repair of fleet equipment and schedules annual equipment maintenance.
  • Inspects, records maintenance of, and advises on the management, improvement and care of lands, facilities pastures and animals.
  • Assists the coordinator in planning and deciding protocols pertaining to facilities, equipment and supplies, animal health and care operations, and employees.
  • Ensures facilities and equipment across all units are well maintained.
  • Assesses nutritional needs of the cattle and suggests options.
  • Ensures adherence to SOP and protocols across all units.
  • Obtains bids and assists with purchasing commodities across multiple units.
  • Ensures there is coordination of management decisions across all units.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 6 years of experience in a veterinary facility or farm environment. At least 1 year of supervisory experience.


Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications




Minimum Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of veterinary teaching hospital practices, animal care, infectious disease protocols, equipment maintenance, and pasture or land management.
Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications
Possession of a valid drivers license, ability to obtain a pesticide license may be required in specific positions

Desired Qualifications
Given the number of Units and cattle across the State and the need for consistency among the units the person must be able to coordinate and manage the animal, equipment, facilities and land needs for the department. The person must have a clear understanding of animal movement, quarantine, equipment usage, biocontainment and pasture management. Must have knowledge of the units within Animal Health Research.
