Position description

The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for a position of Assistant Researcher whose research will focus on the analysis and integration of airborne and spaceborne imaging spectroscopy data to study Earth system processes. This research aims to advance understanding of environmental change through innovative, open, and collaborative remote sensing science.

The research includes the following activities:

* Developing and applying algorithms for analyzing imaging spectroscopy data from airborne and spaceborne platforms.

* Integrating in situ measurements with remote sensing observations to investigate ecosystem structure and function.

* Creating reproducible and open-source workflows for geospatial data processing using Python and related tools.

* Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across institutions to support NASA flight mission objectives and research goals, specifically related to generating standardized products for vegetation characterization from imaging spectroscopy datasets.

* Designing and delivering instructional materials and tutorials in the use of AVIRIS and EMIT data tailored to a range of technical skill levels.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

* A recent Ph.D. in ecosystem science, remote sensing, geography, earth science, or a related field.

* Previous training and experience in imaging spectroscopy, remote sensing analysis, or geospatial data science.

* Extensive knowledge and expertise in processing and analyzing airborne and spaceborne remote sensing data and aligning it with in situ datasets.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Additional qualifications

Additional qualifications and skills:

* Demonstrated experience working with airborne and satellite-based imaging spectroscopy datasets from the NASA AVIRIS and EMIT sensors.

* Familiarity with NASA programmatic requirements and contributions to flight mission science.

* Proven ability to code in Python, especially for geospatial and environmental data applications.

* Experience conducting integrative analysis linking in situ and remotely sensed data.

* Commitment to open science practices, including open data sharing, reproducible coding, and community engagement through instruction.

* Proficiency using GitHub for version control, project management, calendaring, and team coordination.

* Strong organizational skills and the ability to contribute to the management and coordination of research group activities.

* Demonstrated experience using high-performance computing (HPC) systems for large-scale data processing.

* Experience developing and delivering tutorials or workshops for varied audiences and skill levels.
