Professional Writing Consultant - Temporary Hourly

Position Summary

Understand that "good writing" comes in many different shapes and forms. Collaborate with students in all aspects of writing, including brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, and project management. Participate in ongoing training. Welcome all writers into the Writing Center, no matter where they are in their writing process.

This position is a Temporary position that is not benefits-eligible.

This position does require enrollment in a PERA retirement account.

Duties/Responsibilities

Being a professional consultant comes with the following responsibilities:

  • Working one-on-one with diverse clients in 50-minute sessions, which can include synchronous and asynchronous online sessions
  • Fostering a safe or brave space
  • Empowering clients
  • Working as part of a team working to improve writers' processes
  • Being self-directed and open to feedback
  • Participating in continuing education events and activities
  • Advocating for social justice on campus and beyond
  • Representing the Writing Center at campus events and workshops
  • Helping the Writing Center continue to evolve to meet challenges
  • Completing documentation of sessions

Required Qualifications

We are looking for professional consultants who have:

  • A bachelor's degree and an interest in facilitating the growth of other student writers
  • Compassion, empathy, and good communication skills
  • A growth mindset or the interest in developing one
  • Punctual for scheduled shifts
  • An understanding and/or awareness of writing pedagogy and different writing processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual or non-native English speaker
  • Experience working in a writing center or an openness to learn about different approaches to writing consulting
  • Experience (personal or professional) with disability and/or neurodiversity
  • A desire to be part of a community of other people interested in writing and personal growth
  • A willingness to work collaboratively with the staff, consultants, and leadership to improve the Writing Center
  • Open-mindedness about what constitutes a "good writer"

Work Hours

Scheduling is flexible. Up to a maximum of 19 hours per week. Hybrid scheduling available.

Salary for Announcement

The Hourly Rate for this temporary position is as follows:
$26.00 per hour - Bachelors Degree
$27.00 per hour - Masters Degree
$28.00 per hour - Doctoral Degree
