R&D Engineer - US-Remote API Heat Transfer is looking for people who enjoy being part of transformation. We have a new mission, new leaders, and are accelerating our path to Lean Cultural Change. Our Operations Team is on the way to becoming a Lean Management powerhouse! If you like to fix things, improve processes and want to be part of a new API, we'd love to talk to you about our R&D Engineer opportunity! What We Offer You:
- Opportunity to learn from and contribute to a premier, global engineering team!
- Be part of leading-edge technology for the heat transfer industry.
- Ability to impact customers across multiple industries.
- Full health & welfare benefits, 401(k), PTO, and developmental opportunities!
- Travel up to 10%
What You Will Do: The R&D Engineer supports our new product development and applications engineering teams by applying a rigorous understanding of fluid dynamics and heat transfer to the design of compact heat exchangers. This involves enhancing rating software to model new product designs and new configurations for existing designs. The position requires a creative engineer with the ability to grasp and solve complex engineering problems. The R&D Engineer should be proficient in core fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and heat exchanger principles to generate novel solutions that deliver highly performing products to new and existing customers.
- Perform fundamental thermal-hydraulic research to improve the performance of API's existing heat exchanger line (bar and plate, shell and tube, etc.).
- In collaboration with internal customers, develop new software tools to provide accurate thermal-hydraulic modeling of new heat exchanger products.
- Maintain existing in-house thermal rating software to add new features, address bugs, and improve usability.
- Conduct computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of heat exchanger components at the macroscopic and microscopic levels to understand and optimize the products.
- Assist in development of test plans and occasionally empirical testing campaigns to develop thermal-hydraulic correlations or assess product performance.
- Assist in the development of new products through first-principles engineering analysis and creative engineering solutions.
- Diagnose and resolve issues with heat exchanger performance and communicate the solution to relevant stakeholders.
- Review current heat transfer and compact heat exchanger literature to stay abreast of the research.
- Present technical results to internal stakeholders and external customers.
What You Bring:
- Strong understanding of fundamental fluid dynamics and heat transfer through graduate coursework and experience.
- Excellent engineering problem solving skills.
- Experience with CFD tools (ANSYS preferred).
- Fundamental understanding of the principles of CFD.
- Proficiency with scripting tools such as Python, Matlab, Engineering Equation Solver, etc.
- Experience developing performant numerical/scientific software in compiled languages such as C, C++, or Rust.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts through presentations, written reports, and other media.
- Ability to work well in a distributed engineering team.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Thermal or Chemical Engineer or related field required. Master's degree or higher in Mechanical, Thermal, or Chemical Highly Preferred.
