HJF is seeking a Research Associate I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Performs limited analysis and interpretation of results.

This position will be in support of the Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i). The Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i), funded by the Department of Defense was established in 2013. SC2i is a Uniformed Services University center that leverages legacy information from service members, and critically ill civilian and military patients to develop biomarker-driven clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) with the goal of improving patient clinical outcomes and reducing costs across the injury/disease cycle.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Position requires a Secret Security Clearance eligibility



  • Plans, conducts, and completes investigations and projects under supervision.
  • Assists with the writing and editing of experimental results for publication in technical and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Perform complex, non-standard, GCLP (GCP, GLP) tests and experiments in integrative life sciences. This may include multiplex immunoassays (Luminex/MSD/ELISA), Molecular Biology techniques (DNA/RNA isolation and analysis, qRT-PCR, NanoString, RNAseq), Cell Biology techniques (cell sorting/fractionation, cell activation and proliferation, cell culture), and/or Immunology techniques (cell staining, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry).
  • Performs routine data analysis and verifies and corrects data entry.
  • Work with the data management and analytics team to ensure laboratory data are complete and stored in appropriate databases in compliance with GCLP/CAP requirements.
  • Work with QAU (Quality Assurance Unit) to ensure lab/instrument/assay documentations are compliant with GCLP requirements.
  • Adapt and implement new procedures and methods into the laboratory routine, adjust or write SOPs/lab or batch records.
  • Maintain all required Department of Defense training courses that are pertinent to this position and adhere to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to patient confidentiality and privacy (HIPAA/PHI/PII).
  • Present data at departmental and national meetings as required.
  • Interact with equipment/supply vendors, obtaining quotes and sole-source materials to maintain supply inventory.
  • Maintains records and documentation regarding assigned research and appropriate documentation to support testing procedures including database management, notebooks, forms, and log books.
  • Order and restock laboratory supplies and maintain / update electronic or physical inventories.
  • Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Master's Degree in Biological Science or related field
  • Minimum of 0-2 years' experience required


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and complex laboratory procedures, preferred molecular biology and/or immunology experience
  • Ability to meet deadlines of projects
  • Good communication, analytical skills, and ability to multi task
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills
  • Proficiency and working knowledge of molecular, cell biology, and immunological
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret security clearance.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary/hourly pay range for this position is $50,000-$60,000. Actual salary/hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
