Scientist, Physico-Chemical Characterization (Mass Spectrometry)

A career in Boston - main video - YouTube

At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.

We believe the Greater Boston area is an important hub for the biotech and pharma industry, which is why we've invested in growing our footprint and expanding our R&D space in Cambridge, with a primary focus on additional state-of-the-art lab space. Here, we will bring together talent and expertise, building upon GSK's long history of vaccine development, to create globally leading viral capabilities and cutting-edge vaccines technologies, as we add to our robust portfolio targeting infectious diseases at every stage of life.

In the plan to create a new hub for mRNA-based vaccine discovery in Cambridge, we are building new laboratories that will be focused on the development of state-of-the-art methods that will be supporting deep product understanding, process and product development, as well as testing of pre-clinical and clinical samples for new mRNA-based vaccines.

As a Scientist, you will perform analytical development alongside a team of scientists and principal scientists to support early-stage product understanding in a variety of vaccine platforms; with a focus on mRNA, mRNA-LNP, and protein characterization methodologies. Your role is built off your expertise and experiences in mass spectrometric techniques,

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop LC-MS and LC-MS/MS methods to characterize mRNA, DNA, proteins, N-glycans, lipids, and vaccine components.
  • Perform routine biophysical characterization methods as necessary, which include LC-MS, LC-MS/MS, UHPLC, CGE, light scattering, particle characterization, spectroscopy, calorimetry, or compendial tests as needed
  • Preparation of samples for characterization studies
  • Maintain records thorough electronic lab notebooks and documentation records
  • Deliver reproducible and impactful results under ambitious timelines
  • Execute and troubleshoot standard protocols, develop and adapt new protocols into practice to improve assays as needed.
  • Be part and an active member of a High-Performing Team of top scientists driven by innovation, quality and excellence
  • Cultivate department culture: excellence in science and operations, embracing an open global mindset, fostering a positive culture of transparency and collaboration within the global organization.
  • Develop next generation analytical methods for next generation mRNA vaccines using innovative Phys-chem/separation technologies and automation in collaboration with the other teams supporting Preclinical, Drug Substance (DS) and Drug Product (DP) teams for deep product understanding, process development support at the preclinical, DS and DP stages.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • MS candidates should have three or more years of additional laboratory experience.
  • PhD with no additional laboratory experience is acceptable.
  • Two or more years of experience in mass spectrometry based technologies of biomolecules (mRNA, DNA, or Proteins)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • mRNA-LNP vaccine analytics or vaccine development experiences.
  • Strong theoretical and practical background in proteomics and biophysical characterization methodologies.
  • A good understanding of biopharma/vaccine development process.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams to combine analytical technologies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; good presentation skills.
