Responsibilities
Position Purpose: Works under general supervision in the Medical Records Department. Accurately assigns diagnostic and procedural codes in a timely manner for all inpatient and partial patient charts. Assumes responsibility for preparing charts for quarterly audit. Attends corporate coding training sessions. Identifies needs for backing up various tasks such as release of information, filing and retrieving charts, etc. in the department. Ability to problem-solve for Medical Records staff. Will back up Director in various activities in her absence Qualifications POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Licenses or Certifications: CAA, CPC, CCS, RHIT or RHIA. Total education, vocational training and experience: High school graduate with at least one year of Medical Records experience or a degree in Health Information. Two years experience in a psychiatric inpatient hospital preferred or combination of education and experience necessary for completing job tasks and responsibilities. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Must possess knowledge of medical terminology, along with expertise in medical transcription. 2. Requires effective communication and interpersonal actions with the ability to follow instructions, yet perform under stress in a productive, independent manner. 3. Must have typing skill of at least 50 words per minutes. 4. Proficient ICD-9-CM and CPT coding and DRG optimization. 5. Updates/enters computerized patient abstract in the HMS system. 6. Handles all phone calls related to coding issues. 7. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 8. Ability to meet deadlines. 9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. |
