Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Research Data Management Core ( RDMC) is a campus unit that was established by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research ( OVCR) in response to scientific data management and sharing policies issued by federal funding agencies and other critical stakeholders in the scientific enterprise at UNC. These policies demand development and implementation of a campus-wide research data management strategy that supports compliance with those policies.

Authorized and financially supported by the OVCR, the RDMC has been charged with providing overall direction and oversight of operations and activities that prioritize research data management and sharing leadership, support, and innovation. The Director of the Research Data Management Core provides reporting of operations, finances, and program outcomes to the OVCR for program evaluation and unit accountability.
Position Summary
The Infrastructure Engineer is a position in the Research Data Management Core ( RDMC) unit which maintains and develops critical infrastructure for RDMC's systems and platforms. Reporting to the Senior Infrastructure Engineer, this position maintains and develops the underlying technological infrastructure for RDMC systems in order to support a unified, campus-wide ecosystem of research data management and sharing infrastructure and services to ensure compliance with funding agency policies and to promote the goals of those policies. The Infrastructure Engineer also consults with internal and external stakeholders to optimize the functioning and operation of existing software used by RDMC and other partner groups, and to aid in future adoption of new software platforms.

The Infrastructure Engineer has demonstrated expertise in Linux/ UNIX systems administration, network management, and database management/engineering. They possess knowledge of open source software ecosystems and communities, research data outputs, complex data, data preservation, and backups. They also have a keen understanding of trends in research practices, scientific publication, funding agency and institutional policies, and information technology requirements, and how these trends affect research data management and sharing requirements and preferences of research communities.

The primary purpose of the Infrastructure Engineer position is to:
1) maintain and develop RDMC's underlying infrastructure;
2) work with external and internal research and development stakeholders to design, build, and optimize research data systems, pipelines, etc., including engagement with open source software communities;
3) actively participate in research and development activities to improve systems and workflows and discover innovations that can enhance and/or improve research data management and sharing strategies;
4) engage in training and professional development opportunities to keep pace with trends in research practices and emerging technologies that impact data policies, practices, and needs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's or Bachelors and 0-2 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Advanced degree in Information Science, Computer Science, or a combination of related education and experience
- Experience in a research support organization responsible for deploying research data management support technology and services
- Experience in open source software communities
- In-depth applied knowledge of systems administration, database engineering, and network management
- Ability to effectively communicate with audiences of various backgrounds and professional levels including university administrators, faculty researchers, students, and other research stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Masters degree in Information Science, Computer Science, or other area of study relevant to research data management
- History of engagement with open source software communities and work on open source software
- History of contributions to greater professional and scholarly communities through active participation in professional conferences and meetings, publications, funded projects, and other scholarly outputs
