Position Purpose







This position functions as an integral member of the Pharmacy team, working closely with leadership and Research Clinical Pharmacist to provide quality management of clinical investigational drugs, which includes but is not limited to handling and preparation of sterile hazardous drugs.











Nature and Scope







The incumbent manages the clinical investigational drug inventory. The technician independently orders, receives, organizes, and monitors the use of clinical investigational drugs. The technician conducts physical counts, resolves discrepancies, monitors expiry dates, returns study materials, and maintains separate supplies of returned drugs from patients for trials as required by study protocols.

The incumbent provides technical assistance with clinical trial protocols. The technician provides guidance for protocol summaries, participates in the set-up of clinical trials, and assists with staff orientation and training as needed.

The incumbent maintains and assists with record keeping related to clinical trials required by study protocols. The technician files all paperwork pertaining to inventory control activities, responds to inquiries from internal staff and external personnel (i.e. monitors and auditors), assists in preparing invoices, assists in maintaining the clinical investigational drug database, monitors temperatures and environmental controls of storage areas, and generates and submits reports as needed.

The incumbent performs drug distribution activities including processing inpatient and outpatient clinical investigational drug orders, inputting orders into the computer system with pharmacist supervision, assisting in preparing medications and supplies for dispensing, prepack medications, and preparing extemporaneous products using appropriate techniques under pharmacist supervision.

The incumbent prepares intravenous and/or hazardous drug products. The technician shall be proficient in sterile product preparation and be able to perform functions in accordance with established procedures and USP 797/800 guidelines. Knowledge of cytotoxic drug therapy handling, preparation, and disposal is required. The technician follows protocol requirements during preparation of medications.

The incumbent maintains and ensures proper functioning of equipment utilized by the investigational drug team.

The incumbent participates in the education of pharmacy trainees and new employees as required.

The incumbent attends staff meetings on a regular basis.

The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties, work flexible hours, and work overtime.

This position does not provide direct patient care.

Description



Education:



Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Prefer high School Diploma, (or equivalent), proficient math skills. Ability to perform algebraic calculations necessary for the preparation of extemporaneous compounds.



Experience:



Specialized training is encouraged and can be enhanced by completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program or 1-year prior experience in a hospital or community pharmacy. Two (2) years of sterile compounding experience preferred, sterile hazardous drug preparation preferred. Knowledge of pharmacy terminology and calculations. Knowledge of proper handling of hazardous drugs.



License(s):



Licensed by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy



Certification(s):



Requires completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program or have national certification (CPhT, CSPT) or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.



Computer / Typing:



Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc. Typing: 30 wpm
