Job Description Summary:

Performs routine and complex laboratory analyses, quality control, operational improvement, preventative maintenance and education within the Institute for Genomic Medicine. Troubleshoots and provides technical guidance.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

  • Performs routine and complex technical procedures and follows proper equipment use, maintenance, and documentation. Serves as General Supervisor per CAP/CLIA guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe working environment, following applicable laws and regulations and assisting with ongoing safety audits.
  • Reviews the status of clinical and research cases with appropriate leaders. Performs in-depth troubleshooting and problem-solving, identifying and communicating problems, errors, and deviations in lab processes.
  • Performs Quality Control testing of newly received reagents, chemicals, and kits used for patient testing. Completes all quality training and participates in quality assurance programs.
  • Drafts patient reports by interpreting assay results and records laboratory processes and data, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Trains technologists, conducts competency assessments, and assists with new and updated procedure development.

Education Requirement:

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, or Bachelor's degree equivalent education as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations: 42CFR493.1405(b)(5)(i)(B).

Certifications:

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certified as an MT(ASCP), MB(ASCP) or CG(ASCP), required. Certification exam must be completed within 2 years of start date and maintained throughout employment.

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced technical, computer, and critical thinking skills necessary for high-complexity laboratory analysis.
  • Effective oral or written communication. Ability to adapt communication styles for cultural differences.
  • Ability to maintain and foster interpersonal relationships with internal personnel and external customers.
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and in a team.
  • Flexibility with interruptions and changing circumstances.

Experience:

Three years of laboratory experience in cytogenetics, molecular genetics or molecular biology, required.
