Scope of Position

Research pharmacy technicians (RPT 4), under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and in coordination with other technicians:

  • Manage investigational product (IP) and provide technical direction and assistance with clinical trial protocols.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a team, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a high level of organizational skills.

  • Successfully navigate interactions with internal and external customers and partners in a professional and respectful manner

  • Serves as a functional and technical expert; leads and directs technical activities.

  • Anticipates, recognizes and solves complex technician-related issues and questions that arise within the team, department, or with customers

  • Acts as a positive role model for all technicians and acts in an encouraging manner conducive to the hospital, department and administrations visions and values.

  • Assists with and/or leads productivity management, training, and mentoring of new staff, special projects, and committee meetings.

Position Summary

  • In addition to performing all duties of a Research Pharmacy Technician 3, this position coordinates daily workflow, organizes daily assignments, and provides overall support to the operation of the department. This position functions to assist the licensed pharmacist in providing patient care services to patients enrolled in clinical trials. This position provides necessary services and information to research, pharmacy, nursing and medical staff. These services include preparation and packaging of medications; distribution of medications, supplies and equipment; maintaining proper inventory levels; ensuring medications are in date, secure, and stored appropriately. Other services include keeping appropriate records and documentation and submitting billing charges to the appropriate research finance groups. This position is also responsible for supporting initiatives of area supervisors and managers. This position assists with sponsor site visits and associated documentation. This position provides feedback on the Research Pharmacy Technicians performance for annual appraisals, as well as orienting new staff to the Pharmacy area.

  • The monitor and sponsor liaison position serves as a functional and technical specialist for monitoring, auditing and sponsor relations. The role leads and directs technical activities related to monitoring and auditing.

  • The satellite support position serves as a functional and technical specialist for investigational product inventory. The role leads and directs technical activities related to inventory management and satellite pharmacy support.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Active OH Board of Pharmacy Certified Pharmacy Technician registration, PTCB/NHA certification

  • Minimum of 18 months experience within OSUWMC in the role of Research Pharmacy Technician III.

  • Further qualifications defined based on departmental guidance in pharmacy technician career advancement program.
