Who we are and what we do:

The Tennessee Attorney General's Office is a full-service law firm, representing the State in litigation, transactional matters, and investigations and providing day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of state entities and officials.

How you make a difference in this role:

The Office's Civil Rights Enforcement Division enforces the Tennessee Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on certain protected characteristics in housing, employment, public accommodations, and education. The Division investigates discrimination complaints, resolves complaints through both formal and informal mediations, and when necessary, files lawsuits on behalf of complainants and the State of Tennessee. Its office is in Nashville, but the Division has statewide enforcement authority.

Key Responsibilities:

Investigative Paralegals in the Civil Rights Enforcement Division work alongside attorneys and investigators under the supervision of the Division Deputy Attorney General. They conduct thorough reviews of discrimination complaints received by the Division, interview complaining parties, and draft complaint summaries that will be used to help guide investigations and identify potential paths to resolution. Investigative paralegals may also assist the Division's attorneys and investigators with gathering and reviewing documents, interviewing witnesses, and drafting investigative reports and recommendations.

  • Review complaints to determine whether the Division has jurisdiction
  • Interview complainants and other witnesses to gather facts
  • Prepare documents, such as complaint summaries, letters, requests for information, investigative plans, and investigative summaries
  • Conduct research into case law, statutes, and publicly available information relevant to complaints and investigations
  • Refer complainants to external resources when complaints fall outside the Division's jurisdiction
  • Gather and log relevant documents from involved parties
  • Maintain detailed documentation of all activities
  • Organize investigative files
  • Other duties as determined by the Division Director

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, or paralegal certification
  • At least two years experience as a paralegal strongly preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Eagerness to be an enthusiastic member of a collaborative, collegial team of incredible public servants
