Be a Tar Heel! |
A global higher education leader in innovative teaching, research and public service, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill consistently ranks as
one of the nation's top public universities. Known for its beautiful campus, world-class medical care, commitment to the arts and top athletic programs, Carolina is an ideal place to teach, work and learn.
One of the best college towns and best places to live in the United States, Chapel Hill has diverse social, cultural, recreation and professional opportunities that span the campus and community.
The Research Triangle, formed by Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill/Carrboro, has roughly 2 million inhabitants and one of the highest concentrations of doctorates per capita in the United States. In the Research Triangle commuting times are much lower than major
USA cities, air travel connections are very broad, and the level of opportunities for cultural performances, sports events, restaurants of all types, hiking, tennis, golf, and other participatory sports is at least as great as that you would expect in metropolitan areas of much larger size.
University employees can choose from a wide range of
professional training opportunities for career growth, skill development and lifelong learning and enjoy
exclusive perks for numerous retail, restaurant and performing arts discounts, savings on local child care centers and special rates on select campus events.
UNC-Chapel Hill offers full-time employees a
comprehensive benefits package, paid leave, and a variety of health, life and retirement plans and additional programs that support a healthy work/life balance. |
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Computer Science is one of 16 science departments and curricula in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a major research department with more than 35 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 11 teaching-track faculty, 12 research faculty, and 17 adjunct faculty, serving more than a thousand undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Nearly 250 graduate students and nine
EHRA non-faculty members assist with teaching and research activities. Additionally, 15
SHRA positions, including technical and administrative personnel, support the department's infrastructure. Our guiding research principle is collaboration, as it has been since the department's founding in 1964. We believe that computer science's greatest impact lies in working with other scientists to solve problems in their respective disciplines. As such, we actively seek opportunities to initiate new research with colleagues across campus, including in the sciences, medicine, and the humanities. Many computer science faculty members hold adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from other universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and around the world.
UNC Computer Science is a vibrant, collaborative department with a strong record of innovation in both core and applied computing. Our mission is to advance the frontiers of computer science, translate ideas into impactful technologies, and provide outstanding education and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We value interdisciplinary research that bridges subfields of computing and addresses pressing societal challenges. |
