Job Description Summary:The Transportation Research Board is seeking a Database Librarian. As a member of the Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) unit of the Transportation Research Board, the Database Librarian provides high quality indexing and abstracting of publications for the TRID Database. Participates in the development and delivery of instructional materials and training for the databases to staff and users as required. Works with the Indexing Manager to perform quality control of contract indexer's work. Assists with research for the Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT). Provides research and reference services as required. Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

1. Indexes and abstracts materials for the TRID database.

2. Works with the Indexing Manager to provide quality control of contract indexers' work. Advises indexers on best indexing practices and application of TRIS indexing standards. Maintains the TRIS Indexing Guide web site and updates policies as necessary. Works with the Indexing Manager to train new indexers.

3. Assigns work to the contract indexers using the TRIS Data Entry system.

4. Collaborates with manager on data verification processes, coordination of data updates, and ensuring data integrity.

5. Provides reports and analyses to Manager with recommendations for decision making.

6. In collaboration with Indexing Manager develops and maintains documentation for Data Entry System Manual.

7. Regularly scans literature and identifies publications for inclusion in the databases; may import some materials into the database. Participates in team activities related to database development and database enhancements.

8. Participates in testing and assists with system changes, and new module implementations.

9. Advises management regarding database issues and recommends database enhancements.

10. Works with the Manager to develop materials and give presentations and training on databases. Updates and creates documentation and training materials for the TRIS Databases.

11. Provides input and recommendations for thesaurus development. May assist Indexing Manager with thesaurus term research.

12. Works with the Senior Librarian to provide research and reference services as required.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to achieve results with minimal supervision. Strong understanding of database structures. Proficient in MS Office & MS Windows environment (i.e. Excel, Word, etc.). Experience with indexing and abstracting, and a strong understanding of thesauri and taxonomy. Ability to solve intellectual problems of some variety and complexity. Comfortable and adaptable to an array of technologies. Ability to work accurately on detail-oriented tasks as well as coordinate tasks broad in nature. Ability to plan, develop and present effective training in multiple formats and venues. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's Degree in Library Science or related field or equivalent knowledge. Knowledge and degrees in Information Technology combined with library systems and services preferred.

Minimum Experience: Two years of related professional experience.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to the TRIS Manager. Sets objectives with supervisor.

Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 60%, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.

Compensation Range: An estimated compensation range for this position is $56,410 - $70,510. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters.
