These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations. |
Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Sr Carpenter / Maintenance Mechanic for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). This position is needed to support day-to-day Carpentry in all campus buildings to ensure a safe environment for staff and students. Key responsibilities include completing work orders for ceiling tile replacement, floor and wall repairs, and project work to enhance the campus and the aesthetic appearance.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Primarily responsible for the planning and coordination of carpentry duties.
- Selects specified materials in accordance with various building codes.
- Prepares layouts and marks cutting and assembly lines.
- Erects scaffolding and structural framework.
- Applies dry wall and paneling to walls and ceilings.
- Lays and repairs subflooring; installs and repairs flooring tile and linoleum.
- Repairs, fits and installs window, doors, weather stripping, trim, etc.
- Uses a variety of hand and power tools and measuring instruments.
- Cleans shop and work areas. Detects faulty operation of equipment; reports questionable conditions to supervisor; issues work orders to supervisor as necessary.
- Conducts inventory of equipment, materials and supplies.
- Advises management when to reorder stock.
- Responsible for estimating work time, writing up lists of appropriate and needed materials, and providing such materials for him/herself or the group.
- Performs related duties as required. Provides guidance and instruction to craft trainees. If not in a group leading situation, works in a zone or is the only Carpenter/Maintenance Mechanic on a particular campus.
- Responsible for the repair and maintenance of University facilities, and prioritizing and estimating work.
- Notifies supervisor of any emergent problems discovered through performance of assigned duties.
- Secondarily responsible for planning and performing repair and preventive maintenance duties for various types of University property and equipment. Inputs data, as required, to fulfill job responsibilities using current technology.
- Generates and completes automated work orders or service orders.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- High school/vocational school education or equivalent, plus four years experience performing carpentry work.
- Successful completion of an approved training program or of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade, plus two years experience and proven competency in performing complex and varied carpentry work may be substituted for the above experience.

Certifications/Licenses |
- A valid driver's license with two years driving experience is necessary.
- Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Must be competent in performing complex and varied carpentry tasks.
- Good communication skills, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.

Preferred Qualifications |
- May be required to obtain Commercial Driver's License.
