Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.88/hr to $33.52/hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $28.88/hr to $49.76/hr.

Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the general supervision of the General Accounting Manager, the General Accountant 2 position uses professional accounting knowledge to complete assignments and works independently with an understanding of accounting concepts, processes and policies. This position is responsible for preparing basic financial and budgetary journal entries, reconciling ledger accounts, assisting with banking support activities, Chartfield maintenance, campus and intercampus financial support, and other duties as needed. Assists in the year end closing of the general ledger. The University of California, Santa Barbara is an enterprise with expenditures in excess of $1 Billion annually and assets totaling $2 Billion. The reliability and quality of the financial information presented in these statements is essential to the management and resource allocation decisions of an extraordinarily broad clientele of stakeholders, ranging from the State of California, the Regents of the University of California, The University Office of the President (UCOP), the campus Senior Officers and Academic Senate, as well as program managers in numerous campus departments. The integrity and reliability of the information contained in the financial statements plays a critical role in establishing the campus' borrowing capacity in the capital markets, its credit rating, and thereby its ability to expand its mission of providing advanced instruction, research and public service to the People of California. Required Qualifications:
- Associate degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- 1-3 years General accounting and/or AR/AP experience, billing and collections, fund accounting knowledge, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience with an understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting.
- 1-3 years Computer proficiency is required. word processing, spreadsheet, and computerized accounting system experience are essential to this position. Advanced excel knowledge and experience (macros, vlookups, pivot tables) as well as experience working with large data projects, data sets, and data extraction.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1-3 years Experience in a university setting and/or Institute of Higher Learning.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 70% Intercampus Coordination and Account Reconciliation - Involves accounting functions such as analyzing, monitoring, preparing and reconciling the campus financial information. Works with campus departments including Business and Financial Services to research and resolve both budgetary and financial issues in general ledger account balances. Applies policies and procedures to resolve a variety of accounting issues. Assists in the reconciliation of more than $1.4 billion of inter-campus transactions processed through the campus's twelve complex Financial Control accounts, working with all nine UC campuses and UCOP to address significant issues of critical importance. Responsible for recording a high volume of journal activity between UCSB and other UC campuses in accordance with UC policies and GASB accounting standards. Journals are significant in amount, scope, and complexity, including intercampus recharges and cost transfers, capital financing transfers, insurance claims, intercampus revenue distributions, and UC-wide cost allocations. Requires a high degree of coordination and communication to ensure accurate, well-documented, and compliant accounting across UC campuses which may have differences in terminology, processes, and accounting requirements. Processing these journals and troubleshooting intercampus discrepancies requires solid accounting skills and understanding of the Common Chart of Accounts, attention to detail, communication skills, and exercise of judgment in determining effective resolution of issues.
- 20% General Accounting Support - Serves as a first line point of contact for General Accounting, responsible for monitoring and responding to departmental staff inquiries sent to the General Accounting functional email address. The General Accounting functional email receives a wide variety of inquiries, so this position requires significant understanding of accounting concepts and policies, as well as a detailed understanding of common UCSB procedures and relevant contacts within Business and Financial Services. Collaborates with General Accounting team, UCOP, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and various campus contacts as needed to resolve issues by researching, analyzing, and correcting outstanding items using Oracle Financials Cloud. Independently performs responsibilities with a detailed understanding of significant processes, practices and policies. Exercises sound judgment to determine appropriate action for inquiries, which may include independently researching and resolving issues, explaining campus processes and accounting concepts to departments, forwarding inquiries to supervisors for further review, or directing departmental staff to appropriate experts in other central business units. Under the general direction of the General Accounting Manager, assists in all aspects of General Accounting, including Fiscal Close. Assists with teaching of Policies related to campus accounting as per UCOP Policies and Accounting Manual. Assists with financial journal transactions submitted for processing except for the extramural fund groups managed by the BFS Extramural Funds Office (EMFA).
- 10% Special Projects - Participates in special projects as needed by the Manager of General Accounting Office.
