Career & Community Engagement Student Employee - Student Pool

Hourly Rate: $15.00

This position is an on-campus, federal work study student, part-time, 15 hours-per-week appointment based in Champaign, Illinois.


This is a pooled position, which means applications are accepted year-round. When an opening becomes available, qualified applicants from the pool may be contacted for interviews.

This student position is responsible for assisting in the promotion and implementation of Career and Community events, programs, and initiatives. This role is responsible for setting up and maintaining career exploration equipment and facilitating its use with people of all ages, with a primary focus on students in grades 6-12. The student position also collaborates closely with the Career & Community Engagement Program Managers to support on and off-campus and community-based events, including events and activities using the Mobile Unit.

Federal Work Study Student employment positions are part-time, 15 hours-or-less per week, temporary/seasonal appointments. The work schedule is based on departmental needs and employee availability, with typical hours between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend availability is required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide direct support to the Career & Community Engagement (CCE) Program Managers and Director for departmental initiatives.
  • Assist CCE program managers with the preparation and execution of on-campus events, as well as activities in the Career Exploration Room and Mobile Unit, with a focus on grades 6-12.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public in a high-volume environment.
  • Guide and monitor students and families visiting the Career Exploration Room and Mobile Unit.
  • Learn and maintain a base-level knowledge of the mobile unit's functionality and operational features.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of career exploration equipment with the ability to set up, operate, and perform maintenance effectively.
  • Serve as a Parkland brand ambassador to the community.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Meet all eligibility requirements for student employment as determined by Financial Aid.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including active listening, clear in-person and phone communication, and strong spelling, grammar, and proofreading abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Access, Excel, Word), with the ability to learn Parkland College's systems, (e.g., Slate), and new programs as technology changes.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Maintain confidentiality, be punctual, communicate changes in work schedule in advance.
  • Demonstrates strong cultural competency and sensitivity in interaction.
  • Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions, squat, lift, move, push and pull heavy objects, stand for extended periods of time, and operate career exploration equipment.
  • Appropriate attire as discussed for the work environment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
