The Photon Sciences Directorate develops and operates advanced photon sources to support cutting-edge research in physics, chemistry, materials science, and biology. The division focuses on providing high-quality beamline instrumentation, software tools, and user support to enable scientific discovery.

Position Description

The Student Assistant will support software development and technical projects within the Phoebus control system environment. The role includes developing new applications, upgrading existing services, and assisting the team with testing, documentation, and integration tasks. This position provides hands-on experience in accelerator software systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, and maintain software applications, including the Phoebus Shift Application for shift management.

  • Enhance existing services such as the QueueServer, implementing streaming/publish-subscribe endpoints using WebSockets.

  • Assist with code documentation, debugging, deployment, and integration of software tools.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong coding skills and familiarity with Java and web technologies.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Preferred Science Undergraduate Laboratory Intern (SULI)

  • Prior experience with accelerator control systems or Phoebus software.

  • Familiarity with WebSockets, publish-subscribe architectures, or real-time data streaming.

  • Experience with software testing, version control systems, and deployment tools.
