As the Graphic Artist Leader, you will lead Sign Makers in designing informational and regulatory signage and artwork at Washington Dulles International Airport or Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Graphic Artist Leader

Serves in the Structures and Grounds Division of the Airport Maintenance Department at either Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) or Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Leads Sign Makers in creating custom artwork and designing and fabricating informational and regulatory signs and markings for buildings, offices, equipment, vehicles, roadways, and grounds. Ensures completed sign work is accurate and complies with the intent of the work order. Regularly serves on the airfield and roadway striping team; paints a variety of interior and exterior surfaces, as assigned. Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads, advises, and assists Sign Makers in designing, laying out, and fabricating regulatory, informational, and way-finding signage for Airport roadways and Terminals.

Conducts training on new equipment, safety procedures, and proper use of materials and equipment.

Participates with supervisor in planning and scheduling work from work orders and on short- and long-range projects.

Leads Sign Makers in designing and developing graphics and custom artwork to advertise and inform the community, employees, and travelers of special events.

Ensures Sign Makers design and create custom artwork for banners, plaques, decals, and logos for other departments, and special orders are completed within short timeframes.

Observes work in progress to ensure Sign Makers designs, lays out, and fabricates signs based on work orders, specifications, drawings, or general or specific oral instructions. Inspects completed work to ensure acceptable quality and compliance with work orders for supervisory review.

Determines style, dimensions, letter size, color, spacing, margins, grammar, and abbreviations, to achieve clarity, a pleasing effect, and good eye appeal.

Provides technical oversight to ensure Sign Makers fabricate traffic signs and stencils for roadway markings in accordance with Federal and State regulatory specifications.

Uses tools and equipment of the trade, including graphics software and sign-making equipment, precut metal forms or metal cutting equipment, engraving machines, routers, and silkscreen process.

Assesses stock level and maintains inventory of materials in the sign shop, and coordinates the purchase and maintenance of computer equipment and software for the Sign Shop. Makes recommendations for equipment and software upgrades, verifies compatibility with existing equipment and coordinates with vendors to ensure that the correct equipment and software are provided.

Paints airfield and road surface markings by removing old paint, applying tape to pavement, and driving a computerized road-striping truck.

Leads and assists with painting interior and exterior surfaces, as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Five years of progressively responsible experience in graphic arts, computer graphic design, and sign-making trades.

Journey level (full performance) knowledge of and skill in the graphic arts trade to create custom artwork and signage.

Ability to lead projects or work groups, including assigning and reviewing immediate tasks to the group, setting the pace, and checking work in progress and on completion.

Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures is needed to lead others in working safely.

Knowledge of and skill in using graphics to devise effective visual representations using the processes, techniques, and materials used in sign making.

Knowledge of Federal and state requirements and specifications for regulatory signs to fabricate signs of the proper size, shape, and dimensions, and with the correct wording.

Skill in using graphic arts and sign-making equipment, software, and tools, and paint tools and equipment, and in the use of graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Creative Cloud.

Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics) and apply creative problem-solving to identify design problems and create design solutions.

Ability to be self-directed and to work independently.

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer and computerized work order and time, and attendance systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's Degree or higher in Graphic Arts.

Knowledge of striping procedures and equipment.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

[DCA Only] A Class B CDL within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement in the job.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.

Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (lifting objects up to 50 pounds). May stand, bend, stoop, and work with arms raised overhead or work on ladders and lifts.

May be subject to potential hazards common to the painting and sign-making environment. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.

Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
