Primary Purpose of Department
The mission of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UNC Charlotte is to develop human and intellectual resources in all disciplines of Electrical and Computer Engineering and their applications in order to foster technological and economic growth in the Charlotte region, the State of North Carolina, and beyond. The Department has a strong partnership with the College's Energy Production and Infrastructure Center ( EPIC), the School of Data Science, the North Carolina Battery Complexity, Autonomous Vehicle and Electrification Research Center ( BATT CAVE), The Charlotte Aviation Innovation and Research Institute ( AIR Institute), and the University AI Institute. Our nationally recognized programs offer students the opportunity for hands-on learning with experienced faculty who value innovation.

UNC Charlotte has officially joined the top tier of research institutions in the nation with its new R1 designation. This milestone marks a transformative moment for the University, unlocking new opportunities for groundbreaking discoveries, industry partnerships and student success. Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty are leading research and teaching in AI, robotics and automation, cloud computing, cybersecurity, wireless power transfer, electrification, digital twinning, intelligent vehicles, smart and sustainable cities, transformational energy systems and more.

The Department currently enrolls nearly 570 undergraduate and 160 graduate students and employs 36 Faculty and 6 Staff. The Department offers Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Electrical engineering students may add a concentration in power and energy systems, and students in both programs can add a concentration in machine learning. The master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in electrical engineering are nationally ranked.

Description of Work

Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Chair will collaboratively lead and grow departmental academic, research, and outreach activities in the context of the Department's, College's, and University's vision and strategic plan. The responsibilities of the department chairperson can be divided into four primary areas: Personnel, Student & Alumni Affairs, Budget & Planning, and Administration & Service. The Chair will support the Department's mission in a variety of ways, including:

  • Carrying out long-term, strategic collaborative planning efforts focused on achieving excellence in both teaching and research. These activities should include coordination and engagement with the Department and College Advisory Boards;
  • Conducting short-term / operational planning and execution;
  • Mentoring, supervising, and supporting faculty and staff members;
  • Supporting faculty research efforts and initiatives by fostering interdisciplinary and industry collaborations and providing resources;
  • Securing external and internal funding;
  • Improving curriculum design, including accreditation planning and review preparation;
  • Performing research and dissemination of scholarly work in relevant field(s) of expertise; and
  • Teaching courses in related areas at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.


The Chair supports the College and University missions by conducting services for the public and profession, and by participating in other Department and University activities.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or closely related field. This tenured position is open to applicants with credentials and experience commensurate with a full professor.

Candidates should have

  1. A proven academic record of scholarly accomplishment, teaching, and administrative leadership in electrical or computer engineering or a related field;
  2. Demonstrated an ability to work across disciplines to lead a growing, multifaceted department by developing a strong vision for the future;
  3. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build working partnerships nationally and internationally; and,
  4. The ability to lead the Department as outlined in the essential job duties.
