The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, a part of the UW Department of Surgery, is seeking a dynamic, innovative Cardiothoracic Surgeon who has the leadership and vision to contribute to and build upon the state-of-the-art clinical and research programs at UW Health. Candidates with track record of success in maintaining an independent clinical practice with a specialization in surgical treatment of advanced heart failure (mechanical circulatory support and heart/lung transplantation) are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be a critical team member and partner within the Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Close collaboration with the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Heart Failure Cardiology in multidisciplinary program building is expected, in particular centering around the surgical treatment of advanced heart failure. The successful applicant must have a demonstrated interest in clinical practice, research, education and training.

  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations.

  • The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every two years.

  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor on the Clinical Health Science (CHS) track, and Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, and Clinical Professor on the Clinical Teaching (CT) Track. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.


Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Service and Teaching


    • Teach medical students, residents and fellows.

    • Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.




  • Clinical


    • Elective inpatient and outpatient practice will occur at University Hospital.

    • Provide telemedicine consults to inpatients at UnityPoint Meriter Hospital.

    • Call rotation participation includes emergency call for adult acquired cardiac surgery patients and in the shared transplant donor call rotation.




  • Research

    • Support for research and/or programmatic participation/development will also be considered.

School of Medicine and Public Health / Department of Surgery / Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin includes 11 full-time academic faculty who provide a unique multidisciplinary approach to the study, evaluation, and treatment of acquired and congenital cardiovascular and thoracic diseases, including heart and lung transplantation as well as benign and malignant disorders of the thorax. The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has robust support from 22 APP, 14 certified perfusionists, 3 full-time data managers and a physician-scientist.

The Division proudly provides excellent clinical care across the spectrum of adult and pediatric, cardiovascular and thoracic disease. The three sections of the Division include Adult Cardiac Surgery, Congenital Heart Surgery, which treats patients of all ages, and General Thoracic Surgery.

Education within the Division includes a commitment to medical students and General Surgery residents and an ACGME-approved traditional three-year Cardiothoracic residency. The Division also offers a non-accredited fellowship in Thoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support.

The UW Department of Surgery consists of more than 160 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs nationally with extramural research funding, top 15 for 15 consecutive years according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The department provides a robust infrastructure of services including academic resources such as The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research at the University of Wisconsin. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides clinical trial coordinator support for Clinical Trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post-award support. The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.

Compensation:

  • Negotiable, 12 month

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidate is required to have a Wisconsin medical license by the appointment start date.

  • Board certification or board eligibility from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery is required by the appointment start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on CHS Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS Track.

  • For an appointment at Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor rank on CT Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CT Track.


Education:
  • MD, DO, or Equivalent is required
