Position Summary

The Department of Political Science invites applications for an open rank Assistant or Associate Professor faculty position in Comparative Politics, beginning August 10, 2026. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor or at the rank of Associate Professor, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

The Department of Political Science currently employs 12 regular faculty members and maintains a small but highly competitive and nationally recognized graduate program (MA and Ph.D.), as well as a high quality undergraduate major (BA); it also plays an active role in the interdisciplinary Latin American Studies BA and MA programs, the interdisciplinary International Studies BA program, the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program, and the Professional Masters of Science in Global and National Security. UNM's Latin American and Iberian Institute, as well as the International Studies Institute and Global Education Office, provide funding and programmatic support for international scholarship and faculty development.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

* a Ph.D. in Political Science, Government, or related field by August 10, 2026

* a primary specialization in Latin American Comparative Politics

Preferred qualifications:

* demonstrated excellence in conducting substantively and theoretically significant research in comparative politics of Latin America;

* strong methodological expertise;

* demonstrated or potential excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative politics;

* ability to teach an interdisciplinary social science course on Latin America;

* international research experience;

* research program alignment with any of the department's emphases, including democratic representation and effective governance; environmental protection and adaptation; human rights, the rule of law, and conflict resolution; indigenous, race, gender and ethnic politics; or the impact on democracy of new communications and computational technologies

* demonstrated commitment to cultivating an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
