Position Summary

Monitors the business activities of the organization through the maintenance and control of financial records. Performs advanced accounting functions in the management of the organization's business affairs. Prepares integrated financial and statistical reports, statements, projections, and recommendations that may have long-term impact on funding for the organization. Supervises the activities of staff within a business unit, as appropriate to the position. If in a core office, this position is responsible for the internal controls needed to maintain the integrity of UNM's financial system as well as meet the university's institutional regulatory and compliance requirements.

The Student Government Accounting Office (SGAO) is a part of the Student Activities Center and provides fiscal and accounting services for student organizations on our campus. Overall, the office works with approximately 300 student organizations, 2 student governments, approximately $2 million in total budgets, 40 student employees and graduate assistants, scholarship and grants processing, and more. The office has 1-Accountant 3, 3-Accountant 2s, and 3-4 workstudy students. SGAO is a part of the Student Activities Center within the Student Union Building and the Accountant 3 has a private office within that space.

This Accountant 3 position runs the Student Government Accounting Office and supervises all other staff. The Accountant 3 is the primary advisor to the ASUNM and GPSA Finance Committees. As advisor, during the fall and spring semesters, they will be present at Finance Committee meetings every other Wednesday night (7 meetings a semester). The Accountant 3 will also schedule staff to provide support at the fall and spring budget processes which run the course of 2 weekends.

The Accountant 3 supervises functions in the office that include making purchases for student organizations, daily cash deposits, hiring proposals and epafs. Also, managing student organization inventory, arranging sports club travel, processing scholarship awards, creating graduate contracts and grants, reconciling indices, p-card purchases, petty cash and regular reimbursements, initiating P.O.s and JVs, and more. This accounting position is in a very social setting, so people skills and customer service are very important. Students on this campus rely on this Accountant 3 position, and the SGAO staff, to navigate the financial processes at UNM, usually with tight timelines.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

- Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations, and university financial policies and procedures.

- Knowledge of UNM computerized information systems used in financial and/or accounting applications.

- Knowledge of standard and/or fund accounting principles, methods, and applications.

- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with students who do not have a background in accounting or UNM financial policies or procedures.

- Account balancing and reconciling skills.

- Ability to set up and maintain financial accounts and ledgers.

- Ability to function in a team environment.

- Ability to function in a lively, busy, noisy, active office environment.

- Ability to work occasionally on Wednesday evenings and weekends.

- Demonstrated experience supervising employees
