Job Summary: The Director of Mortgage Banking has overall responsibility for mortgage loan originations, growth of the mortgage loan servicing portfolio, and customer experience. Responsible for mortgage banker training and professional development. Manage the mortgage program through team production while maintaining high credit standards and profitability. Provide strategic leadership and hands-on production within the mortgage division by leading a team of mortgage bankers while personally originating quality loans. This role combines accountability for setting direction, developing talent, and ensuring regulatory compliance with the ability to actively generate mortgage business, drive growth of the loan portfolio, and deliver strong customer experiences. Success is measured by both leadership impact and individual production that aligns with Minnwest's commitment to high credit standards, profitability, and community banking values.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):



  • Leadership and overall accountability for Mortgage Banking including Mortgage Bankers and Mortgage Area Managers
  • Drives team Mortgage production and progress towards Mortgage department annual goals and strategic plans (secondary market, in-house, home equity, and construction).
  • Manages and grows the existing serviced loan portfolio, watches for potential problems, communicates any potential deterioration proactively to loan committee and collects if past dues occur
  • Contribute to bank profitability through interest spreads and generation of fee income.
  • Promote Minnwest Bank and obtain new business through customer referrals, cross selling and the officer call program.
  • Research and implement new mortgage products. Understands competitive market and industry trends in the Mortgage function.
  • Develop a working knowledge of all retail products and services and effectively cross sell to meet total bank objectives.
  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, and developing Mortgage Bankers and Managers
  • Work collaboratively with business lines to identify opportunities to cross-sell and optimize our processes
  • Demonstrate proactive communication and cooperation with staff to identify solutions and effective methods to ensure excellence in sales and service.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department to effectively market the mortgage business.
  • Understands mortgage related compliance and regulatory rules and processes. Works with Compliance to ensure our processes meet all related regulations such as BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) or other applicable Mortgage compliance rules are met within the mortgage department.
  • Compliance with Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC and USA PATRIOT Act including Customer Identification Program, customer due diligence, identifying high risk accounts, reporting suspicious activities to Supervisor or BSA Department.
  • Continually evaluates processes and procedures to ensure maximum effectiveness, ensuring bank resources are appropriate to meet objectives


Minimum Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree, preferable in finance/business-related field, or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of experience in mortgage banking, preference for a community bank
  • 5 years of management experience
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing sales teams
  • Excellent sales, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong customer and sales focus with goal orientation and analytical ability
  • Knowledge of mortgage industry trends, competitive landscape and partnerships
  • Vision-setting and ability to align mortgage goals with overall bank strategy
  • Familiarity with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, and USDA guidelines


Preferred Qualifications:



  • 15 years of experience in mortgage banking within a community banking environment
  • 10 years of management experience with demonstrated success leading managers of managers (5 - 8 direct reports including supervisors and professional staff)
  • Knowledge of banking regulations and compliance governing loans and deposits
  • Strong grasp of secondary markets, loan sales, and servicing processes
  • Experience driving sales team and results to achieve goals


Schedule: Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Workplace Environment:



  • Requires face-to-face interaction and coordination of work with other employees and departments, and in-person interaction.
  • Working at a computer and utilizing a telephone
  • Occasionally lifting up to 50lbs


Salary Range: $108,000 - $140,000 annual base plus commission

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. The salary range represents anticipated base pay for this role. The actual pay offered will consider internal equity and may vary based on factors including but not limited to work location, candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
