What to Expect

The Power Electronics team is seeking a skilled Industrial Electrician to support the development and testing of Tesla's power electronics systems. As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with Engineers to set up and maintain lab electrical setups for testing medium voltage (up to 40kV) components, ensuring safe and effective validation of innovative technologies and designs. Your expertise in industrial electrical systems will help drive improvements in safety practices, operational procedures, and overall system reliability.

In this role, you will leverage your hands-on experience to support the design and execution of test setups, implement lab safety protocols, and provide valuable feedback on designs and processes. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you'll contribute to iterating on prototypes, analyzing test outcomes, and identifying opportunities for enhancement. Your attention to detail, safety-first mindset, and practical skills will be essential in tackling complex challenges in a high-voltage lab setting.

Success in this role requires being a proactive team player with strong communication skills, a solid work ethic, and a passion for advancing sustainable energy solutions. You'll thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, adapting to evolving priorities while contributing to the performance, reliability, and safety of power electronics systems.

The Power Electronics team is committed to accelerating innovation and rapidly iterating designs. As an Industrial Electrician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our lab operations, combining electrical expertise with a methodical approach to setup, testing, and continuous improvement.

What You'll Do
  • Support the setup and maintenance of lab test environments for medium voltage (up to 40kV) systems, including wiring, connections, and equipment configuration to enable engineer-led testing and validation of power electronics technology and designs
  • Implement and enforce safety practices, including developing and updating lab operating procedures to comply with high-voltage safety standards and Tesla's EH&S policies
  • Provide feedback on test setups, designs, and processes to identify improvements in efficiency, safety, and performance, contributing to design enhancements and iterative development
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting and analysis of electrical and electromechanical systems in medium voltage environments to identify root causes of issues and implement corrective actions
  • Ensure all testing activities adhere to safety protocols and industry standards, particularly for medium voltage applications, including lockout/tagout procedures and PPE requirements
  • Assist in the assembly, testing, and analysis of engineering prototypes to validate design assumptions and uncover opportunities for improvement
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate electrical test equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability in medium voltage testing processes
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements in lab operations and implement changes to increase efficiency, productivity, and safety
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, reliability, and test engineers, to address technical challenges and support product development
  • Manage material inventory related to electrical setups, including procurement and organization of components for high-voltage testing

What You'll Bring
  • Extensive practical experience as an industrial electrician, with a strong background in medium voltage systems (up to 40kV), including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Proven experience or familiarity with high-voltage safety protocols, testing, and validation in lab or industrial environments
  • Proficient in electrical fabrication, expert-level skills with hand and power tools, and experience with wiring harnesses, connectors, and medium voltage equipment
  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble electrical systems independently, demonstrating strong technical aptitude in medium voltage applications
  • Familiarity with standard electronics lab tools, including AC/DC meters, data acquisition systems, oscilloscopes, and high-voltage testing instruments
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, particularly in troubleshooting and root cause analysis for electrical systems in medium voltage contexts
  • Excellent written communication skills, with experience in documenting test setups, safety procedures, and feedback on designs
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team, with strong self-direction and initiative
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., with frequent standing, walking, and bending in a fast-paced lab environment
  • Certification as an industrial electrician (e.g., journeyman level) and experience with CAD software or electrical design tools is a plus
