Assistant Professor, Music Therapy

The FIU Wertheim School of Music and the Performing Arts seeks an Assistant Professor in Music Therapy for its new Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music Therapy. This is a full-time, 9-month position that begins in August 2026. The WSOM&P is seeking a music therapist and educator who is experienced with program development, community engagement, and interdisciplinary study. The ideal candidate has strong music skills, familiarity with accreditation and licensure, and a willingness to work across disciplines within the institution. The successful candidate will be expected to direct the bachelor's degree in music therapy, recruit new students, and develop a master's program in music therapy.

Responsibilities and Expectations

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in music therapy and related areas, depending on expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to curricular development and program accreditation processes; supervise student practica, internships, and clinical placements; and mentor students in scholarly activities. This individual is also expected to maintain an active scholarly/creative agenda (research, publications, conference presentations, clinical innovation) and participate in departmental, college, and university service, including student advising and mentoring, recruitment, and community engagement. The position also requires developing a master's degree program in Music Therapy.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Music Therapy, Music Education with a Music Therapy emphasis, or equivalent
  • Board Certified: MT-BC
  • Clinical experience, at least 5 years
  • Record of scholarly/creative achievement through presentation and research
  • Established research agenda that would lead to tenure

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7-10 years of experience
  • Evidence of quality teaching and meaningful service
  • Publication in music therapy journals

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to teach music therapy courses at the undergraduate and master's levels
  • Strong musicianship skills
