2:00 pm - 10:30 pm; Tuesday - Thursday and Friday and Saturday with a variable schedule according to building needs.

This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position performs building services activities throughout the Center City Building to ensure that the building meets established Unit standards. Also performs accurate room/common area sets up and takedowns for events, in and around the building as directed.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Job Duties
The Building Environmental Services ( BES) Technician performs custodial services to support the University.

Duties Include, but are not limited to:



  • Clean and care for academic buildings, offices, studios, other State buildings, and the grounds surrounding University and State facilities.
  • Maintain equipment and keep it in good working order.
  • Compile and maintain checklists and report needs to BES Supervisor or appropriate lead BES Technician in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Assist the BES Supervisor and lead Technicians in testing and making recommendations on supply and equipment purchases.
  • Follow established Facilities Management, UNC Charlotte, and State policies and procedures.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Assist the BES Supervisor and lead Technicians in testing and making recommendations on supply and equipment purchases.
  • Follow established Facilities Management, UNC Charlotte, and State Policies and Procedures.
  • Use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in floor maintenance, housekeeping, recycling, event support, and exterior litter removal functions.
  • Work is guided by a daily schedule for general assignments.
  • Work is performed subject to close review and inspection with problems and special assignments not covered by instructions referred to a supervisor.
  • Duties are repetitive in nature and include physically-strenuous activities such as moving furniture, operating heavy cleaning equipment, wearing a backpack vacuum, and delivering large quantities of housekeeping supplies.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures and operation of floor equipment such as floor buffers, side-by-sides, chariots, and carpet extractors.
  • Experience with floor care including stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning classrooms, restrooms, and common areas; performing trash and recycling collection; and setting up and breaking down events and classes.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and a willingness to learn new programs.
  • Ability to foster and maintain an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
