30 hrs/wk. Monday - Friday; flexible hours between 7:30 am - 5:00 pm, with rotating weekend watering duties (approx. 1 weekend per month). Although the schedule will be flexible, it will be a regular schedule that is approved by the supervisor. |
| Primary Purpose of Position |
The purpose of the Horticulturist may include assisting with the cultivation, care, and maintenance of the tropical plant (greenhouse) collections, contributing to the management of the outdoor nursery, and sharing responsibilities for the semi-annual plant sales. The position also has responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations of a small, freestanding research greenhouse. The Horticulturist may also assist with maintenance of the McMillan Greenhouse facilities. This position assists with horticultural practices, including, but not limited to, planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, pesticide use, pruning, training, and garden equipment maintenance in the outdoor gardens. An interest and the ability to supervise and lead a small work crew of students and/or volunteers are required. Work includes collaborating with the Botanical Gardens staff, especially the horticultural team. Work requires limited work on some weekends and holidays during the year for plant care, as well as for special events. |

| Essential Job Duties |
- Maintain safe, clean, and functionally attractive display environments in the greenhouse and gardens.
- Horticultural care of plant collections, including identifying problems and pursuing solutions.
- Contribute to the care and maintenance of greenhouse facilities.
- Manage the outdoor plant nursery and contribute to the semi-annual plant sales.
- Actively contribute to the horticultural team to complete tasks, meet goals, and/or manage projects.
- Full investment in and accountability to the horticultural team, including role flexibility to find opportunities to learn and contribute.
- Support the horticultural team through constant communication, active listening, and routine assistance.
- Lead management and maintenance of the "Research Greenhouse".
- Participate in Weekend Watering Duties (a rotating monthly schedule with other staff).

Collaborate with other staff, volunteers, and student workers on general garden/greenhouse maintenance, display renovations, plant sales, and garden events. |
