Remote Job Title: Data Center Telecom Designer - Hyperscale Reports To: Lead Designer
Job Summary: The Data Center Telecom Designer will be a key member of the IES Design Branch, specializing in the design of telecommunications and low-voltage infrastructure systems for hyperscale and large enterprise data centers. This role requires deep technical expertise in structured cabling, fiber architecture, and AI-ready data environments. The Designer will lead and support multiple complex design efforts, ensuring scalable, standards-based, and constructible solutions are delivered to our clients with precision and innovation. General Job Duties and Responsibilities: Serve as a lead designer and subject matter expert for large-scale data center projects, focusing on ISP and OSP fiber architecture, structured cabling, and network room layouts. Participate in all project phases from concept and basis-of-design through construction documents and implementation support. Collaborate directly with architects, end users, and hyperscale client teams to understand current and future technology needs. Lead internal design coordination with CAD/BIM teams to produce detailed construction documentation including single-line diagrams, rack elevations, and pathway layouts. Ensure all designs adhere to TIA, BICSI, and client-specific standards, as well as hyperscale data center best practices. Review drawings, submittals, and RFP documents for quality control and alignment with project scope and deliverables. Work closely with estimating, project management, and operations to ensure seamless project handoffs and constructability alignment. Support development of campus-wide fiber master plans, MMR/IDF/MDF designs, and redundant fiber distribution topologies. Maintain strong vendor relationships to identify emerging technologies and supply chain efficiencies relevant to hyperscale deployments. Attend design and coordination meetings virtually or in person as required by the client or project. Min USD $140,000.00/Yr. Max USD $190,000.00/Yr. Qualifications Physical and Mental Requirements: Technically driven with a solutions-focused mindset and strong attention to detail. Comfortable in a fast-paced, collaborative design environment supporting multiple large projects simultaneously. Passionate about data center innovation, AI infrastructure, and next-generation connectivity design. Positive, proactive communicator who aligns with IES's culture of quality, safety, and excellence. Proven ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain quality across concurrent design packages. Excellent communication, documentation, and client presentation skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project) required. Must be able to travel within the United States as needed for client and design meetings. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements: Minimum 5 years of experience in low-voltage or data center design, with direct experience in hyperscale, colocation, or large enterprise environments required. Strong understanding of fiber and copper cabling infrastructure, AI network architecture requirements, and data center design principles. RCDD, DCDC, or equivalent certification strongly preferred. AutoCAD and/or Revit a plus but not required. Ability to review and mark up complex design packages. Experience in collaborating with major hyperscale clients (e.g., Meta, Google, AWS, Switch, Microsoft, etc.) is highly desirable. Working knowledge of TIA-942, BICSI TDMM, and related data center standards.
