Department Overview

The Electric Engineering team ensures the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Engineering is responsible for PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, assets management, business planning, restoration, and emergency response.

Position Summary

PG&E is implementing IEC 61850 global standards across its electric substations. The transition to communication-based protection and control systems necessitates specialized proficiency in networking technologies to guarantee secure, reliable, and high-performance system operations.

This position demands a high level of expertise in network architecture, IEC 61850 communication models, time synchronization, and cybersecurity controls to facilitate protection, control, and automation tasks. The successful candidate performs in-depth testing, resolves complex networking issues, and works closely with protection engineering and substation test teams to achieve smooth integration of digital protection and control technologies.

The ideal candidate will serve as a liaison, collaborating with System Protection, System Automation, Compliance, Substation Test, and IT teams as a technical leader to ensure that protection and control network systems operate with optimal reliability and are fully compliant with WECC PRC and NERC CIP standards.

Position duties may include but are not limited to-

  • Performs the most complex operation, management, and maintenance of network and telecommunication systems, linked systems and peripherals to enhance network operations, in accordance with processes and procedures associated with protection and control systems in electric substations.
  • Responsible for high complexity technical support and administration of critical infrastructure network components (e.g. ethernet switches, fiber optic cables, FDUs, etc.) associated with protection and control systems in electric substations.
  • Configures, Commission and Maintains and operates systems and services associated with PG&E's digital substation process bus infrastructure, providing 3rd tier support by analyzing, diagnosing and resolving the most complex problems.
  • Supports and mentors other specialists on complex operations, management, and maintenance support of digital substation network and telecommunication systems, linked systems and peripherals to enhance network operations.
  • Leads and supports improvements in automation of system infrastructure and development of tools and solutions associated with protection and control systems, digital substation networks, and including network monitoring.
  • Serves as a technical leader, recommending best practices solutions design, implementation, and creation of technical standards.
  • Acts as a team lead on cross-functional projects in electric substations; provides guidance to peers on other projects.
  • Works with other stakeholders to identify, plan, prioritize and implement complex project deliverables associated with Digital Substation applications.
  • Assures and may oversee compliance with industry and company standards, including NERC-CIP, collaborating with appropriate team members to develop action plans and restore infrastructure to full compliance and standards of process bus networks in Digital Substations.
  • Knowledgeable and can fulfill all the responsibilities of the Expert Specialist
  • Searches for opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, increase efficiencies, etc.
  • Serves as a technical leader who mentors and develops employees and internal training programs on the targeted systems

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory and may require 20-30% travel across the territory. The headquarter location is flexible and can be based out of Oakland, West Sacramento, Fresno, San Ramon.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $65.87 to $117.30

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.

* Works with other stakeholders to identify, plan, prioritize and implement complex project deliverables.

Qualifications-

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related discipline, or equivalent experience or technical training.
  • Certification applicable to the system being supported
  • 10 years of computer networking experience

Desired:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related discipline, or equivalent experience or technical training.
  • Certification applicable to the system being supported

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledgeable and fulfills all the requirements of the Expert Specialist.
  • Proficient of industry standards such as but not limited to including IEC 61850
  • In-depth Technical knowledge on communication protocols IEC61850, DNP3, Modbus, PTP etc.
  • In-depth technical knowledge on network redundancy protocols like Software Defined Network, RSTP, PRP, HSR etc.
  • Master-level knowledge in the field, recognized as a subject matter expert in substation protection and control systems.
  • Thorough understanding of all Layers of OSI Stack, and the equipment supporting each layer.
  • Knowledge of computing systems platforms (Unix/Linux) that are leveraged in management of Network Infrastructure and programing languages used in scripting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with one or more scripting languages, including Python, Java, Perl, C++
  • Fluency with IPv4, IPv6, SNMP v2, SNMP v3, MPLS, BGP, Load Balancers, Cisco IOS & IOS-XR, NTP, Load Balancing, Wireless
  • Technical familiarity with Layer-1 Transport systems, including SONET and DWDM
  • Proficiency using Network Management Systems to monitor, diagnose and enhance system operations.
