Job Summary

This position requires technical acumen for planning, designing, developing, implementing and administering data-based systems that acquire, prepare, store and provide access to data and metadata. Maintains and optimizes systems and migrates data and systems as needed. Ensures integrity and completeness of data and workflow, manages and / or develops data practices, databases and information systems as well as guidelines, dictionaries, registries and / or services. May include interpretation of scientific research data artifacts as well as mediation across science and technology domains and long-term data care. As information architect and data steward, designs systems, data products and / or data production processes while focusing on data curation, data exchange, data security, data integrity and information environments. (Re)evaluates frameworks, strategies, standards and standards-making activities. May involve work with a project-level data repository, a center or an archive.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the analysis, retrieval and management of clinical data from a healthcare software system or Master's Degree in related field
  • Minimum 3 year experience maintaining and supporting clinical systems such as Clinical Trials Management Systems, Biorepositories, Electronic Data Capture Systems, Faculty Profile Management Systems, or Investigation Drug Management Systems or Master's Degree in related field
  • Minimum 2 year of experience working with standardized healthcare codes (e.g., ICD, COT, LOINC, SNOMED) or Master's Degree in related field
  • Minimum 4 year experience with various programming languages and software such as SQL, MySQL, Oracle, stored procedures, Python, Tableau, Business Objects or Master's Degree in related field
  • Experience in the design, development of enterprise data marts with high availability/scalability/performance
  • Experience with integrating complicated data from very disparate sources
  • Experience with PL/SQL and SQL
  • Experience working with data analytics
  • Experience with installation, configuration, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of computer operating systems
  • Experience working as a responsible team member with excellent communication and customer service skills necessary to effectively contribute to a creative group
  • Experience using logic and flow diagrams to describe the function processes of a system
  • Demonstrated experience with data interface engines in a healthcare environment
  • Proficient in computer science algorithms and data structures
  • Ability to analyze research data management workflow and apply software or procedural solutions
  • Demonstrated organization skills and flexibility to manage multiple tasks independently and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated writing skills needed to translate system processes and associated manual processes into clear instructions and explanations
  • Familiar with the use of secure file sharing such as SFTP, and understanding of best practices in data management, data security, and data privacy within clinical systems
  • Familiar with electronic health record systems, such as EPIC
  • Familiar with data integration, data repository design, and management of enterprise data repository systems
  • Working knowledge of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) applications

Preferred Qualification

  • Master of Science degree or 10+ years of experience
  • EPIC knowledge and experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced experience working with relational database design, information and database modeling
  • Experience with cyber or network security development
  • Business Intelligence experience; (i.e. Business Objects Suite)
  • Epic/Clarity skills are preferred, while this role will not be supporting that system directly
  • Knowledge of HIPAA patient confidentiality and privacy regulations

Department Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse, multi-site department whose mission is to be scientific leaders who promote excellence through clinical diagnostics, next generation innovation, collaborative discovery and world class education in service to all communities. UC Davis is leading the way in diagnosing, treating, and ultimately preventing disease. Pathology brings these tools together with education and patient care to transform the field. This position sets the highest standards for professionalism and administrative competency as the department continues a period of growth and restructuring. The department has over $12 million in external research funding which supports multi-disciplinary research in neuroscience, cancer, computational pathology, and healthcare delivery science, and co-leads the Center for Diagnostic Innovation. Education is provided at many different levels, including highly ranked required courses and electives for medical students, 16-person residency program, 7 fellowships, and participation in graduate programs. Departmental academic operations are conducted within central administrative offices in various locations at the Medical Center in Sacramento and in research space on both the Sacramento and Davis campuses.

Department Specific Job Scope

This position will architect, design, implement, and maintain a research data mart capable of supporting data retrievals and advanced analytics. The incumbent will also design and implement business intelligence solutions for aggregating data from multiple sources and producing time sensitive reports and dashboards. Major projects include support for research and employee analytics using systems such as OMOP, Atlas, REDCap, and Tableau. This position will also design and implement data source acquisition, ETL (extract, transform, load) processes, and application development for a variety of complex projects. Work and decisions are reviewed in terms of meeting objectives when performed within the accepted parameters of UCD/UCDH policies and procedures and the general guidelines of the department. Innovative solutions to application problems are planned in coordination with the unit managers, particularly those that affect the accountability of the unit and coordination of work. Incumbent interacts with operating systems and data management systems and has independent responsibility for clinical data warehousing applications related to assigned projects and associated grants; developing and maintaining interfaces with separate data systems; and provides specification development for each component of the project infrastructure. This position will work with Health System data management applications, which may include PL\SQL, SQL, Java, Business Objects, various open-source applications, and select vendor and custom interface engines. This position will also serve as the lead project manager on specific projects.
