Job Summary Limited Appointment will end one year from date of hire.
Under direct supervision, acquires foundational skills and knowledge of professional concepts in research data management and analysis. Works on small projects or defined segments of larger multicenter studies with limited scope and complexity.
Supports the design, cleaning, and analysis of clinical research data and assists in maintaining data systems for ongoing observational studies. Develops basic proficiency in R and SQL for data manipulation, learns data integrity and quality assurance principles, and contributes to reports and data visualizations under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
The UCSF Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Data Analyst to support ongoing multicenter research projects in transplant anesthesia. The analyst will work under the supervision of Dr. Dieter Adelmann, co-principal investigator of the UCSF Transplant Anesthesia Research Group (TARG) and the SATA multicenter Liver Transplant Outcomes in Anesthesia Database (liverdatabase.com).
This role is ideally suited for individuals with strong programming and data management skills who are interested in applying these skills to clinical research and patient outcomes. The position offers exposure to real-world medical data, collaborative research infrastructure, and the opportunity to develop applied skills in data management, clinical informatics, and multicenter coordination.
Involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting a wide variety of research data. Designs and conducts research including selecting data samples, developing research instruments, analyzing collected information according to established statistical methods, and developing recommendations based on research findings. Prepares reports, charts, tables, and other visual aids to interpret and communicate data and results.
Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the incumbent will perform entry-level duties related to supporting and coordinating a multicenter observational study. They may receive additional training to prepare and advance to the next level within the series. The position involves direct participation in the design, data management, and coordination of multicenter studies focused on perioperative outcomes in liver and kidney transplantation.
- Support multicenter observational studies, including projects within the Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia (SATA) Liver Database and Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG).
- Assist in maintaining and updating existing data collection tools (REDCap) and related documentation.
- Import, clean, and validate data from participating sites; identify and resolve data quality issues such as missingness, outliers, or inconsistencies.
- Write and execute SQL queries to extract and link data from clinical databases
- Assist participating institutions in using REDCAP and managing their own data for the SATA Database
- Prepare summary reports, tables, and visualizations in R (or Python) to support internal quality checks and research analyses.
- Support the PI in communication and data coordination across participating institutions to ensure compatibility and standardization.
- Participate in project meetings and assist in managing timelines and deliverables.
- Handle protected health information (PHI) responsibly and complete UCSF-mandated compliance and privacy training.
- Learn additional data management tools and frameworks as needed.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of pay, benefits, etc are currently subject to negotiation with the appropriate union. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $63,700 - $84,000 (Annual Rate). Department Description The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UCSF provides outstanding patient care, advances cutting-edge basic and clinical research, and trains the next generation of clinicians and scientists. With an annual budget of $145 million-primarily composed of professional fee income and extramural funding-the department is one of the largest in the UCSF School of Medicine. It includes over 285 faculty members, 22 staff physicians, 200 staff employees, 18 fellows, 87 residents, 12 non-faculty academics, 7 postdoctoral scholars, 68 CRNAs, and 6 nurse practitioners across multiple clinical sites including Moffitt-Long Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the San Francisco VA, Mt. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Acquiring knowledge of research function. Acquiring ability to perform research analysis duties.
- Acquiring statistical analysis, systems programming, and database design skills to perform research analysis duties.
- Ability to effectively manage time and see assigned parts of projects through to completion on deadline.
- Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
- Proficiency with either R programming software or Python programming software.
- Basic understanding of relational database design.
- Ability to utilize programming languages to conduct data cleaning on large datasets.
- Ability to utilize programming languages to create simple queries in relational databases.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects
- Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency with R, Python or SQL.
- Experience working with large clinical datasets.
- Ability to help clean clinical data.
